Hey, welcome to BE.

Quick answer is twofold. The first is that yes, mining skills are in short supply. There are ex-pat roles available with the big players. I suggest you contact your local offices of Anglo American and BHP Billiton who are the 2 main players and see if they are recruiting in SA for your particular skills. This is far more workable than contacting employers here.

The problem you are facing is that the mining industry in SA is in a very precarious position. Huge labour unrest, coupled with a very weak rand and government interference and incompetence are making the mining houses seriously consider their future in SA.

Gold and diamonds are particularly under threat, although manganese is an area that seems to be flourishing. The other area to look at is fracking in the Karoo. That's going to be big next year (no pesky environmentalists to stop the ANC exploting that). Also, lots of solar and wind companies are moving into the Northern Cape - may be options here. Consider Iderbola or Gransolar - both Spanish companies.

Good luck,

Ed
