Re: Hillbrow SA
I lived in Orchards in 1968/69 and spent many evenings in Hillbrow as that’s where it all happened. I dont recall ever having any security problems and my car was never broken into. There was a place called the Summit club, which was great, as it had lots of facilities including a very reasonable restaurant. We used to see the weekly recorded uk football matches . We left for Rhodesia in late 1969 as we couldnt live with apartheid any more.
When SA had the much hated white government there were no security problems. I walked home from Hillbrow to Joubert Park area at night. Those problems came with the "rainbow nation".
I remember Summit Club well, I know Hillbrow well. I was a single young immigrant. Life couldn't have been better.
I eventually left because I wanted to see more of the African continent, and it was time to earn real money.
I still have a love for Africa. If it was possible Botswana would be our choice.
BTW, Rhodesia had apartheid just like SA. But they hadn't given the racial segregation a name.
