Try to budgeting.
Hi every Singapore Expert,
We just arrived a week ago. Try to do some budgeting on how much we can spend on accommodation. Anyone know how much we need to spend on; Travel (mrt, bus): Electricity: Gas: Water: Council tax: Groceries: We'll be a family of 4 with 2 young children 4 & 1. We'll probably do a lot of home cooking except the weekend. Thanks guys. |

Hi Harlow Lad
Welcome to Sweatypore! These are quite hard questions to answer as a lot of it depends on where you are living, how big your place is etc. We are a family of 4 also but my kids are older - 7 and 4. We spend around $450 per week on groceries. I shop at Fairprice which is a bit cheaper than the likes of Cold Storage and majorly cheaper than places like Marketplace. We also now buy all our fruit, veg and chicken at the local wet market. I think grocery shopping has got more expensive recently as I'm definitely spending more than I used to. Try to acclimatise by not using your air con as much as you can (although you've arrived at a very hot time of year so this might be hard). We used the air con a lot when we first arrived and when we stopped our electricity bills dropped by around $400 per month!! Hope this helps a wee bit. Maybe some of the others can help with travel, electricity, gas costs etc. Where are you going to be living and where are you going to be working? Does your work provide any shuttle buses? |

Yes Sweatypore! I've got the look of perfume ad wet hunk, except with real sweat. $450 for groceries  really? Thats extreme. The place that we looking at no where near work place so have to rely on public transport. |
Re: Try to budgeting.
How expensive is the accomodation?
Someone in passing mentioned either $10k per month or $10 million to buy a place:-o All we will be needing is a 4 bed 2 bath with access to gym and pool. Our preference is for fans than AC. |
Re: Try to budgeting.
It really depends on where you want to live. I noticed on another thread that you mentioned near the Botanic Gardens. That's pretty central so you will certainly pay more than you would if you stayed further out of the central area.
We live in Yishun (in the north) and pay $4500 for a 4 bedroom penthouse apartment (two floors with a roof terrace). It's around 2,200 sq ft which is fairly big. But you really do have to shop around. There's so much choice of accommodation - landed (i.e. a detached or semi-detached house), cluster housing (terraced houses with condo facilities), condos etc. We lived in a cluster house in Ang Mo Kio previously and paid $6k there. It was bigger than what we have now but I prefer our condo - so it's all down to personal preference. Also - we moved here 2.5 years ago so prices may have gone up or down since then - I'm not sure as I haven't been watching the rental market here. You can't buy a landed property in Singapore unless you are PR and even then you have to apply to the government for permission to buy. Hope this helps. |

Re: Try to budgeting.
Admiralty isn't that far from where I am in Yishun. We're still planning our move across the border!
