Default Singapore - employee vacation time

Hi all,

I was wondering how many working days of vacation time one generally gets in Singapore (excluding bank holidays), for employees in financial services, consulting or accounting firms.

Thanks!
Sanjay

It depends on your employer. Local firms are not generous - 2 weeks per year for example. If you are on an expat posting then it is usually the same as you currently get - when we were there my husband continued to get his usual 6 weeks per year, but he works for a British company.

Basically if the employer is European based then the vacations will be generous. American-owned companies are quite stingy.

The good thing is that there are loads of public holidays in Singapore!

Check out the best website with forums for expats going to Singapore; http://www.expatsingapore.com

Please note; your name indicates that you are Indian. There is definitely bias towards the majority Chinese population there as my Indian Singaporean friends attested. My husband recruited an Indian secretary and the (Chinese) HR manager was very unhappy about it.

The concept of "bank holidays" is alien to Singapore.

Re Englishmum's comments about biasness against Indians in Singapore, this may be true in the lower- and middle- level positions. However, this again depends on the culture of the hiring company. A good example is a well-known US credit card cum bank which has a regional HQ in Singapore: it hires quite a few expat Indians on expat packages for upper-management positions, be it Indians from the US or from India itself.
