Posted to Singapore
Dear All, I'm a 29 year old taking a up a job in my firm's Singapore office - it's a 2 or 3 year posting (at least to start with). I'm moving alone and, now that most other things are organised, it's just struck me that I'm going to be pretty much starting from scratch on the making friends / social front. Any recommendations or suggestions as to how any of you went about building a social life in Singapore would be greatly appreciated - I can see from the internet that there are fair few societies, but they seem to get pretty mixed reviews! I'm not much of a clubber - so turning up on the night scene and hoping to bump into new friends probably won't do me much good...

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I'm not in Singapore but I'm sure of our regulars will be along soon to advise you. You may wish to browse through the Singapore section here. There's already a few posts from others who are in the same boat as yourself.
Also, for a start off, take a look at this thread. Bocat mentions about a meetups site.

Happy planning You'll have a great time in Singapore, I'm sure.

Thanks for bringing up the Meetups bakedbean. JKE83 - you'll have a great time in Singapore - it's a very sociable place.
I started a ladies Meetup group in Singapore two years ago (and now have one in Johor as I moved just across the border last year).
Our group is:
http://www.meetup.com/Singapore-Inte...-Ladies-Group/
but if you just go to www.meetup.com and look for groups in Singapore you'll see a whole range of groups on there - some are just social groups, some for sports, hobbies etc etc.
There are also a lot of groups on Facebook.
I know when I came from the UK in 2008 it felt quite alien to go and meet people I'd met on the Internet - it all seemed a bit dodgy - but it's so so common out here.
Best of luck with your move!

I think the world has changed too, hasn't it? Most of my best friends here in Penang I met originally via the internet. It's the way to go

Gosh that is close - walking distance? I ended up just next to Redhill MRT - and I work on Anson Road, so only about 3 stops.

It was a bit of a slow start on the social front, as alot of the people I met / work with are recent partents / young families - but things have picked up over the past 2 or 3 weeks (which is nice!)
