Hey everyone!

Just joined and been reading like crazy on all the different threads. A truly great community you guys have going here. The situation I am in at the moment, and have been for a while, is that I am committed to getting out of the UK. Having been to Singapore 5 times I have decided to make that my goal in terms of a destination to live.

I am a Cisco qualified Network Engineer and was just wondering what my best method of making the jump would be? I had searched the numerous job sites and there definitely seems to be opportunities which match my skill set. I am just looking for some advice in terms of likelihood of employment and if I should just pack up and come?

I'm single with no kids so this time in my life is perfect to fulfill my plans.

Personally I wouldn't pack up and move.

See how getting a job from those advertised goes first, if successful the company should arrange all visas etc and you can move then.

Accommodation is expensive in Singapore and you might blow a lot of money before you are either successful at finding a job or decide to rerurn.

Do you know if IT industry is fairly achievable to break into over there?

IIRC there're a couple of posters on here involved in IT, but I dunno if they post regularly.

From my pov and not being in the industy I'd say Singapore produces a lot of homegrown IT talent and over the last 4 or 5 years they've filled any empty positions with many from overseas.

Of course if you are an expert in some niche of IT then there might still be vacancies but you might be hard pushed to find what you hope.

Check put the online job sites and see what they are looking for and whether it suits you.

Also within the last 5 years contracts have become 'local term contracts' with lower salaries and less add ons such as accomodation, medical, schooling, flights etc etc, the ex pat contracts are still around but nowadays just for the very top managerial staff.

Hi Lesley

Make sure you're on Linked In and try contacting some of the job agencies over here who specialise in your field.

Also - apply directly to any companies/industries where your skills are utilised - banking, oil & gas, shipping, pharmaceuticals are all very popular industries here with expats.
