Switzerland Bans VW Car Sales Over Emissions
Will other countries do likewise ?
Surely all cars known to be illegal should be taken off the road until they comply with the law.
There must be millions of legal cars new and secondhand in dealers throughout Europe which could be loaned out meanwhile.
"Meanwhile, it has emerged EU officials knew devices able to skew exhaust readings were being used five years ago and the European Commission was warned about their dangers two years ago.
The devices were banned by European legislation in 2007, making it a legal responsibility for the national testing authorities to enforce the ban - indicating Germany failed to uphold EU law."
So much for EU laws.
Happy to knowingly allow Germany to continue to flout the law for eight years and maybe more ?

Re: VW Seat Scandal.
The fact that it was ignored is a surprise? VW employs lots and lots of European taxpayers. That alone is good cause for ignoring "insignificant" little violations.
When was it, 86? When WV threatened to move everything to south Africa if they didn't get tax breaks amounting to the equivalent of zero taxes. They do, after all, employ lots and lots of European taxpayers who pay amongst the world's highest taxes.

Re: VW Seat Scandal.
If it's a new VAG car, it is almost certain to conform to the new euro6 emission regs so it is not affected. The (very old) engine that gave all these problems has been replaced with an entirely new engine which was designed from scratch to meet the new regs. The old engine was never designed for this which is why they had to frig the ECU to enable it to do so.
The big problem facing owners of these old engines is that they will be recalled and the "hack" removed from the ECU so that they will then meet the emission standards under normal road use as opposed to only under test conditions. The problem is, that with all the stringent emission controls in place on the road, the performance of the car will be seriously downgraded and the fuel consumption will be much higher.

Re: VW Seat Scandal.
I don't understand the figures they are quoting that 180000 cars will be affected. All cars manufactured since 1st September 2015 will meet the euro6 emissions standard and Switzerland is happy with those cars. All cars already registered with the suspect engine (which only meets the eoro5 standard) are OK, so where are they going to find this mythical 1800000 old cars which have not yet been registered? They would need huge fields full of last year's models waiting to be sold - that doesn't seem likely!
The only figure I have seen refers to eleven million cars worldwide,
possibly some of them as yet unregistered ?
I see also that the half million sold in the U.S. are not included in that figure.
Ironically the 2009 VW Jetta which is also affected, was voted the clean green car of the year in the U.S.

Did Angela Merkel cover up Volkswagen emissions scandal? | Daily Mail Online
Interesting and informative article.
Apparently the Labour govt were pushing the sale of diesels back in the 90s believing they were cleaner.
Who knows how much Merkel knew, but it was mentioned today that she'd been in touch with Cameron asking him not to put the block on VW sales.
No doubt one good turn deserves another, we shall see.

Re: VW Seat Scandal.
The old engine was type E189 and that has been replaced in most cases with a brand new design, type EA288 which meets the euro6 without the need for cheating. It's not obvious what engine you would have in a car made in the last year or so, exactly what model have you ordered?
