An article that doesn't spare the US (nor Spain) from criticism, but very interesting.

Haven't read your link but things like this don't help

"China has demanded an apology from Spain after a TV show featured a sign reading 'No dogs or Chinese'"

Then there were the black faces on criminal posters yesterday.

To me it was a little strange that she was taken aback by the Chinese shops being called '"Chinos" because they are often run by people of Asian descent'.

As far as I am aware many of them are called "Tienda China" or "Bazar Chino" above the door and there is absolutely nothing racist about it.

So she - an American views that as racist and we don't.

I've come across this before. My American sister in law was horrified when I used the term 'oriental'. I explained that in meant no more than 'from the east' but she wasn't convinced at all.

Just shows that what one culture deems to be racist is fine in another.

Should we therefore ignore the Spanish football and F1 fans?

I think for too long it's been passed off as Xenophobia, though I've never seen them running away in terror every time they met someone from another country. It's almost a cultural thing especially with regard to black people, who so often I've seen them making snide remarks or cracking jokes about whenever they appear on TV.

I've seen some of it locally also where many W.and N. African traders have been driven away from the local markets.

I'm afraid that these days too many people do not know the meaning of the term "racist". It's changed, just as the term "gay" has, which used to mean "happy", but that meaning has been "outed" if I dare suggest.
In the UK I've even heard of people condemning the term "white coffee".

Yes, we must be aware of people's sensibilities, but not at the cost of language censorship.
Rolls Royce found to their cost many years ago when they introduced a new model car which they named "Silver Mist", only to discover that 'Mist' is German for a 'dung heap'.

I found the article neither interesting nor original.

Her shock and bewilderment at certain things say's more about the social experiment that is the US than it does about European attitudes.
