We CAN'T cope: EU blamed as thousands of refugees pour in at out of control borders | UK | News | Daily Express
Sadly it's taken a major crisis for the reality to hit home.

I don't recall miles of barbed wires and guard towers before Schengen. Suspending the Schengen Agreement would make no difference whatsoever to the current crisis. If thousands of people want to cross a border en masse, short of machine guns and minefields, then they will do.
What is your solution by the way?

The bigger crisis is the suffering of the people in Syria. There was a little boy on the news yesterday, interviewed outside the station in Hungary. He said "we just want the war to stop, then we wouldn't want to come to europe. Just stop the war".
If not to Europe, then where?

Re: Schengen Shambles
Ms Merkel warned that if the EU was unable to agree on how to accommodate migrants, demands for borders to be reintroduced in the passport-free Schengen zone would rise.
“If we don't succeed in fairly distributing refugees, then some people will want to put the Schengen question on the agenda,” she added.
“That’s not our aim. We want a fair allocation of refugees and then we won't have to discuss Schengen…there's no point in publicly calling each other names, but we must simply say that the current situation is not satisfactory."

Actually she said the reverse.
Probably best you stop treating the Daily Express website as a reliable source of information.

Angela Merkel has warned that the “Europe we want” will fade if some countries continue to demand the reintroduction of border controls rather than taking in refugees.
A number of EU countries have already made it clear they are not prepared to co operate and take refugees.
Who is she referring to with "the Europe we want ?"
It's fairly clear from the last few meetings that the Europe Merkel wants, is very far removed from the Europe that many countries want.
I fancy her days as the great EU dictator will soon be coming to a close, especially with the ever increasing backlash in her own country, with even more to come.

Re: Schengen Shambles
There is the option for member states to reintroduce internal border controls in exceptional circumstances, i.e a serious threat to public order and internal security.
Shambolics.

Shambolic and Farcical indeed.
This human tragedy following hot on the heels of the Euro fiasco
and what a wonderful display of EU unity with everyone fighting like cat and dog while the refugee crisis continues to worsen.
The whole shambolic EU house of cards seems to be collapsing even quicker than most pessimists predicted.
The latest is that Hungary blames it all on the Germans and furthermore clearly states that it does not want the Muslims.
No great surprise there I suppose.

Re: Schengen Shambles
I thought there was a certain irony with refugees wanting to be taken to Germany rather than being forced on a train to a camp.
The whole thing is a mess. Still the EU is meeting in about 10 days time to come up with a solution. Good luck with that.
Divi up whoever wants to come to Europe according to a size of country/wealth of country algorythm. Cameron has to dig his heels in and say no more migrants or play straight into the feeble "leave Europe " camp. More irony there as Britain apparently has about 2 million working taxpaying migrants. I bet he is cursing the Greeks and Italians for them not keeping all their migrants.
I also see that Spain is like Britain , in not taking their "fair share".
Funny how no one is asking the question "why the Arab league " and oil rich gulf states aren't taking their own in? lnteresting article on BBC website explaining why. Migrant crisis: Why Syrians do not flee to Gulf states - BBC News

Re: Schengen Shambles
I find it interesting that Cameron can't win either way. Supporting staying in the EU or not. Laughable, really.
