In Spain, mounting concern about Brexit

Central to all the separate initiatives is the growing awareness in Spain that a Brexit could have a negative impact on thousands of Spanish workers who come daily to Gibraltar to work and on Spanish businesses who rely on Gibraltar for all or part of their income.

Two local pleasure boats had their fishing lines cut by a Guardia Civil vessel in British Gibraltar territorial waters on Thursday evening.

In the first incident at around 6pm, a local pleasure vessel fishing Bluefin tuna was approached by the Spanish patrol boat off the east side of the Rock, within the three-mile limit of British waters.

The Spanish vessel, which had already been read sovereignty warnings by the Royal Navy, ordered the occupants of the local vessel to stop.

The Royal Gibraltar Police had already been contacted and when the two locals refused to stop, the Guardia Civil vessel swerved across their stern before moving off.

“It cut the two lines we had in the sea,” the sports fisherman, who is licensed to fish tuna in Gibraltar waters, told the Chronicle. “Each of those lures is worth anything from £50 to £80.”

Ignoring the clear and repeated message from the Gibraltar Government that the Rock’s sovereignty is not negotiable, Sr García-Margallo once again proposed joint sovereignty as a way for Gibraltar to maintain its links to the EU.

But Miguel Angel Vázquez, the spokesman for the Junta de Andalucia, said the minister’s emphasis on joint sovereignty was “a long way” from where the Junta believed the focus should be, which was “on people” who will be affected by Brexit.

Britain’s new Prime Minister Theresa May met Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia yesterday afternoon to discuss Gibraltar, Brexit and Spanish “rhetoric” about the Rock.

The meeting took place in the Prime Minister’s Rooms in the House of Commons, which Mrs May had taken possession of just a few moments before.

They agreed Gibraltar would be “fully involved” in the negotiations to withdraw from the EU and would have an input into the discussions through the new unit in the Cabinet Office.

'EuroCop' calls for de-escalation

The European Confederation of Police has called for an immediate de-escalation in the political tensions in seas near Gibraltar.

The association, also known as ‘EuroCop’, says the lives of police officers from both Gibraltar and Spain are at risk as a consequence, and this is unacceptable. It says Police officers from both Gibraltar and Spain should be left to get on with their jobs and not be expected to be pawns in a dispute that extends far beyond their areas of responsibility.
