Fridge/Freezer CFC Shipping Issue
#1
Hi All, we just had Crown Removals around for a quote and he raised the issue of fridges and freezers and the AQIS stance with reference to CFC content, has anyone else had this and has anyone taken their fridges and freezers to oz, with/without problems, cheers

This must be new legislation. I brought mine out 6 months ago, a frost free freezer and a fridge freezer. They are both fine, still work and are working happily away in my garage. Bring them if you can as you will want an extra fridge for your drinks.

Importing CFCs or HFCs is banned. If your 'fridge is not too old the chances are it runs on pentane which is ok. I did find a web page on this and posted it a while ago but I can't find it now. I'll try again when I have a moment.

this wouldn't surprise me!
The hole in the Ozone layer has been occuring now for some 25 to 30 years, but only in the Southern Hemisphere to date, causing skin cancer rates to sky rocket compared to the 60's and 70's when we could lie on the beach all weekend . . . those were the days!!!!!
It's the Northern Hemisphere pollutants causing it all.
Australia (and NZ, I assume) are getting very touchy nowadays about any CFCs, whether it's fridges or air conditioners in older cars, banning the use of some types of CFCs outright.

Oh well i suppose we will have to buy a new walk in type with ice maker, teasmaid, fondue set, cuddly toy & all that sort of stuff.
Does anyone know the average cost of a "Big" fridge in Oz??

You're talking about on average for the very big two door, top of the range ( stainless steel) around the 3 grand mark ( Au)
http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/v3/index.cfm
this is one of the cheapest places around Brisbane .. for a good guide to go by... just a few examples/specials in their book there.
On average, I'd say a "normal " "big" - one door white fridge, around the mid $1500, it really does depend.. the sky's your limit really.
just put in the post code 4000 to view the catalogue ( it's not my post code, it's the city of Brisbane code, but that will get you in)

If this is new legislation then it is very recent, because my stuff only left the UK at the end of Feb and no one said anything about problems with the Fridge. (had PSS, Crown, Allied & John Masons round for quotes). they were all more concerned regarding garden equipment and tools (soil & rust etc).
I have to admit though, we did end up buying a new aussie fridge here. (A$1100) Completely dwarfs the UK one qwhich now sits in the garage as the beer fridge

The trick is to be very cheeky (you are the customer..you can always take your money else where
) ... and haggle, haggle with them - this works if you are buying a lot of stuff which comes to thousands - be cheeky! ( it's my training in Asia that does it.. haggle , haggle)cheers

We normally paid them by credit card, and were only refused the cash discount once.
