I emailed yesterday and received a response n a couple of hours.
They ask a question 'How will you use this service?' Um, as a car to take me places in Dubai..

Apparently customers taking taxis that go through Salik gates will have to pay the charge from Jan 1st. This will only cause massive traffic jams on places like Al Wasl and Beach Road when people try to dodge this. It's bad enough already.
Another way to try and raise money to fund the latest projects?

Re: Taxis in Dubai???? Where have they gone!?!
Used Careem last night for the first time ( to return my family to the airport after a visit). Two very smart Lexus with well presented drivers with excellent English. Loaded up the Sherpa sized luggage without a murmur and apparently drove safely, efficiently and ensured that the family were delivered to luggage trolleys etc at terminal 1.
Cost was 100 per car which compares to a regular dxb transport fare of around 70 or 80 from my place. I was pleased with the service and this will now be my choice of transport to the airport (going back to work on Sunday and expect to start my 2 or 3 airport runs per week again).

Going back to the original question: a (local) guy at work told me that a number of taxis have been taken out of service so that the meters can be programmed to register the SALIK automatically.
Not sure how they do that but it sounds plausible/logical enough...........

Second time I used Careem last night from the wilds of JVT to Atlantis. On time, no fuss, safe drive and about 20Dhm more than a normal taxi (which I'd have been stressing about if it would come or not). Luverly!
