Default Importing a motocycle

Can anyone help with some basic info on importing a motorcycle. We intend to bring down our 125cc Piaggio Vespa and register it in Italy - it is currently off the road in UK but I intend to advise DVLA that it will be exported - Does anyone know what paperwork apart from V5 will be necessary to bring with bike in order to start the process - Any assistance will be greatly appreciated as hate to arrive here with no MOT etc and encounter a problem that couldnt be solved this end. thanks

I tried to do this, is your scoot a current production model or is it a classic?

Well that makes it easier as long as the same configuration is, or was, onsale in Italy. Apart from V5, MoT test cert you would need to obtain theoriginal manufacturers technical specification. The cost to nationalise isdifficult to estimate but I would say it would be between 200 and 400 Euro andyou would also have to do a fair bit of standing in queues, you would be bestadvised to engage the services of a "pratica auto" that specialisesin nationalising vehicles (this also has a cost of course). The scoot wouldalso have to undergo a "revisione" (Italian MoT). You need toconsider the current value of the scoot WRT the cost of nationalising andtransporting it to Italy.

FYI I was trying to nationalise a 1960's Triumph (of a type that was sold inItaly in the 60's). It became very difficult, risky, bureaucraticand expensive. I pulled out when the estimates to complete the work exceededEU800.

But you'd think that a vespa would be easier. I also had issues re-registering a truck and wouldn't really fancy getting into it again.

But i also like my Vespa and they are a probably cheaper in the UK than to buy in Italy.

If you bought one over here you still have to pay for change of ownership anyway?

i've no doubt a modern vespa would be easier than a 1960's Triumph but the value is lower too. I reckon nationalisation would be around EU350, the cost of transport i don't know. Could be zero if its a company funded move or around £500 if you pay someone to bring it. A 4 or 5 year old Vespa 125 would cost about EU2,000 or less to buy so its seems pointless spending half the value getting it to Italy and changing the plates. There may also be technical issues such as speedo may need to indicate in Km/hr and lights need to dip to the RHS to pass the revisione.

If you aren't transporting it your self on the cheap you could try uship - ive used them about 3 / 4 times now and got cheap quotes.

If i remember correctly there used to be a bloke on their and he charged around £200 for a motorbike from UK to Italy.
