He brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people, and raised a lot of money for charity, not to mention Stoke Mandeville hospital.

A great achievement to be remembered as much for his charity work as his entertaining.

It's estimated he raised £40 million for charity during his life. That's a lot more than most of us have managed - about £40 million more in my case . An incredible achievement from someone who really didn't have that much natural talent - but delivered where it mattered.

Got to admit I allways found him to be a little creepy but could never put my finger on it, that being said though, the work & help he did for charities was incredible and was clearly a very generous man. R.I.P.

You are not alone

Not saying it was the case with JS but much of these celebs charity raising is not as clear as it seems. They charge vast amounts for luxury accommodation, expenses etc. and sometimes the charity is left with a pittance after they have been paid out. Remember how there was all the Hype about Bob Hope charities, turned out he was ripping them off big time!

Those charity golf events is just a freebie holiday and a bit of publicity for them. Max Bygraves once came to an event in marbella, travel and hotel expenses paid, even though his Daughter had a sizeable house there. Some even charge the charity appearance money.

As far as I know he was very generous with his time and helped a lot less fortunate than ourselves.

Unless you know different(?), please don't speak ill of the dead

In that case you should keep it to yourself, the man has only been dead 48 hours.

It is totally inappropriate.

Whatever you think of the man, he did a lot for those less fortunate than himself. How many politicians can you say that about?

I seem to think that you are right.
But does that not prove my point. He raised money for the needy. She took it away from them ( I speak from experience w.r.t. Thatcher)
