i pretty much need to know if i go over with my hgv class 1 uk license what would i need to do to transfer it over to an alberta license? would i need to take a refresher course or take the whole test again? what sort of expenses am i looking at? would her qualification be recognised over there? is there any credible websites that could help us? just a few questions going through my head lol thanks in advance for any responses

You should have a look at the Trucking forum:-

Have a look at the Wiki (blue bar at top of page) to see if there is another visa route you'd qualify for, and also the CIC website. This Wiki article may also be useful........http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Truck_Driving_in_Canada

Once I had this, I could then do an Air-brake certificate course which usually take around 2 days. And then once I had the air-brake certificate I could then apply to take the Class 1 (LGV 1) knowledge and driving test.
I don't have an exact figure but I think the whole process should cost around $1500-$2000 CDN.
With regards to working and finding a job, you would first need to find a company willing to offer you a job and go through the process of bringing in a 'foreign' driver. Fortunately for you, there are a couple of large and very reputable companies in Alberta that are currently recruiting drivers, and are well practised in bringing in foreign drivers.
The first is West Can transport, (www.westcanbulktransport.com) and they have various depots across not only Alberta, but also a couple of other provinces too.
The second is H & R Transport which is based in Lethbridge Alberta, and as of today, on one of the Nationally recognised job wesites (www.jobbank.gc.ca) they are looking for 40 drivers!
So, there's a little bit of info here for you but you will find all the info you need in order to work in Canada on www.cic.gc.ca
Hope this is of help to you and all the best.

We came over on the Alberta Provincial Nominee Programme last october with H & R transport. They are actually in the UK at the moment doing interviews. It cost us $1690 to do the Class 1 training, which you need to do to drive class 1 over here. That is the only way for truckers to come over here as it is not on the skilled list. I am almost sure that for child care, you need to get some sort of qualification over here too as the English qualifications are not enough. Hope that helps a little

I would do some internet based research on H&R - apparently they are a revolving door for foreign drivers.
A decent company should not charge you a penny for training/tests.
40 drivers???? wow

Im just amazed that you had to pay anything - I had all my costs paid and was paid an hourly rate whilst training. I still would think long and hard about H&R after reading some of the stories out there. Not all bad but some real shockers and would advise anyone to do as much homework about any potential employer before commiting thats all.

Nobody seems to have mentioned that, as TFWs it actually states on your WP that you cannot work with children.

Can anyone help? I'm thinking of moving over with my family. Been in touch with siemens about work and I've been offered an interview. Can anyone tell me what sort of company they are? I've heard of drivers only earning $500 a week (with H+R). Would I be better coming over on my own first and then bring the family.
