Question Charleston, South Carolina

Can anyone give me any thoughts on this location? My husband has a possible job opportunity there, and I know nothing about it. Muchas gracias.

I've been there as a tourist, but don't have any info on living there. It's a lovely old (for the US) smallish city, gorgeous houses in the historic part of the town very Spanish in feel. Very hot and humid in the summer, mildish winters.

Look at my photos on FB I think the album is called vacation SC 2010

Not much help really. It is a lovely place but I have no idea what it would be like to live in. I think there are a couple of people who live in SC hopefully they'll be along to help you out

city-data.com had a lot of info on the place when I last looked at the city...I really liked what I found except the humidity.

CoL looked great, housing was fairly affordable, compared to other places I was looking at, but house maintenance was pretty high, because of the humidity and also utility costs were pretty high. I guess not much has changed there, and probably be used to that coming from CA.

This was all before I had a kidlet, so wasn't bothered at looking at the school situation, so no idea there.

Getting about was also not so great, from a cost perspective, but that also probably has changed a lot.

Job bounce was also a bit of a downer, though I've no idea what that might be like for your OH.

As it turned out, the company I was looking at and talking to at the time quickly got bought out, went into a hiring freeze and shortly afterwards got shut down, so it's probably a good thing I didn't end up there

Thanks Bob, I've seen citydata mentioned before on here but I didn't think to look at it.

I'm not good with heat/humidity, so that is off-putting.

Apparently the position he's looking at is financed by a local millionaire, not sure how all that would work or other opportunities if it went wrong.

Everything has AC though, so it's not that bad for a day to day, just end up having evenings out to do things and the days indoors rather than loads of out door day time stuff was the impression I was getting....but because of that, those AC costs were high and some of the older houses had to be redone on a regular basis because they rotted out....only a issue for home owners I guess, or you'd get a modern home

Speaking of Charleston, where has Englishtart been? No posts since Sept... a while after she moved there.

Did I miss something?

Very hot and humid in the summer, normally mild winters although this year it's been cold down there too. We even had freezing rain a week ago here!

Out of all the towns in SC, I'd say Charleston is one of the nicer ones. It's also one of the busiest and the tourist season boosts the population big time. The traffic can be bad at times. I live 2hrs north in Myrtle Beach but regularly go down to Charleston. I'm not sure about schools, best areas to live etc.

Coming from LA you'll probably find it a bit of a culture shock. That said you won't have to deal with the crowded freeways and the smog!

Which is totally awesome in its total awesomeness.

I don't know much about SC but Septima Poinsette Clark was from there and she turned out pretty good.

I had to look her up I'm afraid.

Things like this are still amazing to me: Clark recalls the gross discrepancies that existed between her school and the white school across the street. Clark's school had 132 students and only one other teacher. As the teaching principal, Clark made $35 per week, while the other teacher made $25. Meanwhile, the white school across the street had only three students, and the teacher who worked there received $85 per week. It was her first-hand experience with these inequalities that led Clark to become an active proponent for pay equalization for teachers. It was in 1919 that her pay equalization work brought her into the movement for civil rights.
