Default Demerit Points in Australia by State

I'm getting a bit worried about how easy people seem to pick up demerit points since moving to Australia, especially in Queensland where we're headed.

It will be interesting to see how many people have picked up points compared to those who haven't.

If you don't drive in Australia then please don't vote.

NOTE:

You are allowed to select multiple entries in case you have lived in more than one state e.g. YES in QLD and NO in WA. Please don't be silly and vote yes & no for the same state.

If you don't drive in Australia then please don't vote and please don't ask for the "other" option - there ain't one.

me: 16 years driving in UK - nul points.
H : 17 years driving in UK - nul points.

Now after 10 years in Melbourne :
me : 3 points (to share the load)
H : 7 all for about 2 kms over speed limit...oh and the 3 points for doing 110 on a 100km freeway when overtaking to get past and pull back in (to get away from bloke driving up his bumper)

Yes, have had my license suspended for three months due to accruing 12 points within the 3 year period. Not difficult to do really. Didnt even know that I had had my license suspended as even though I registered my car during this time, the suspension paperwork went to my old address which meant I didnt have the option of applying for a single demerit point to get me to work.

Dont be fooled, this doesnt stop people from driving like dickheads, it just inconveniences those of us who need to go about our business in a bit of a hurry.

You don't have a safe search filter on your google page then?

I left out ACT, but the poll only allows 15 entries and because it's such a small State I left it out.

Sorry for those who live there.

I drove for 10 years in the UK without any penalty.

THEN:

Within a year of arriving in Australia I'd been done speeding 4 times in Qld (3 points each) and took the 3 month ban.

In the 10 years since I've bee don once moe speeding in Qld. (Also 3 points).
..and then this easter I picked up 6 points driving in NSW under their "buy one get one free" scheme at holiday periods for an offence that would have been just 1 point in Qld (11kmh over).

So thats 21 points in 12 years...

My sister has visited on three occassions and has picked up 3 points in Qld in 7 weeks of driving.

My father has visited on about 6 occassions and has picked up 3 points in Qld in about 20 weeks of driving.

Points on your licence are inevitable and unavoidable. The good news is they are so commonplace that they have virtually no effect whatsoever on insurance premiums unless either you get enough to result in a ban or have a single offence of a SERIOUS nature (drunk driving, dangerous driving etc etc)

Amazingly, I didn't get any points in the UK during my 22 year driving history. Amazing, because I regularly travelled over the 70mph limit on motorways the length and breadth of the country.

If I had got demerit points it would have been no one's fault but mine.

We've only been in Australia 2 and a bit years (almost 2 years in Qld and 6 months now in NSW) but I haven't received any demerit points here either. I do find I don't tend to go over whatever the limit is as most drivers in the areas I travel don't either (which is truly amazing)

If I do get any demerit points, again, it won't be anyone's fault but mine.

Agreed - I dont blame anyone else for my collection of points (although I am *pissed off* about my NSW incident)...

I will continue to break the speed limit - its almost impossible not to do at least occasionaly and I prefer to concentrate on driving safely (i.e. paying careful attention to my surroundings) rather than focusing on speed 100% of the time. The inevitable trade-off is that from time to time I will be exceeding the legal limit and will pay for the priviledge.

It will try to not let it effect my driving/riding.

Yes, this pissed me off in the UK. I only got done for 1 speeding ticket in the UK yet I got a fine, 3 points and my insurance premium went up by about GBP70. Nice earner for the insurance companies over there, fortunately that does not happen here.
