Poor bus drivers
It doesn't look very hopeful for those UK bus drivers that were recruited by the City of Calgary the other year

I guess its another warning to those on temporary visas that nothing is guaranteed

Re: Poor bus drivers
Anyone on a temp. Visa should never plan on staying in any country on a permanent basis, sucks but temporary doesn't mean permanent.
Never assume a temporary status will turn into permanent status.

Re: Poor bus drivers
- they were recruited by Canadians who came to them
- bus driving is not, by nature, temporary as is, for example, building something
- they went to a place with a boom and bust economy, they might have expected the government there to plan ahead, next boom they'll want more foreign bus drivers, treating this lot well would facilitate getting them
- there are only 18 of them and they're working, letting them stay is not going to be a great burden on the economy
- replacing them with people, likely other immigrants anyway, who have lost good jobs oilling or whatever and who just want something to keep them going until the next boom is false economy.
Why these people should want to be bus drivers in Calgary is beyond being a mystery to me but I don't see how anyone wins by sending them back.

Is your comment about "these people" being bus drivers or "these people" being in Calgary or, if both, what's wrong with being a bus driver in Calgary??

Calgary is hardly Shangri-La, though I suppose it's nicer than Winnipeg. I can see that one might be willing to go there if there was a lot of money involved but, in the case of the bus drivers, there isn't so it's hard to see how they're better off than they would be in, say, Watford. Perhaps they came from Manchester, one gains the impression on this board that Winnipeg would be a step up from Manchester.

That sucks, but sadly does not suprise me
When I clicked on the thread i assumed this was another "Candaian driving standards" type thread.

Re: Poor bus drivers
There appears to be hope for the bus drivers but not in Alberta.
First a letter to the editor in today's Calgary Herald from Alberta's Minister of Employment and Immigration. British bus drivers must go home.
But it appears they have been given the opportunity to apply for positions with Winnipeg Transit.
Article also in today's Calgary Herald. Winnipeg offers jobs to displaced transit workers

Re: Poor bus drivers
Reminds me of companies in the Middle East who just decide to transfer a load of labourers to another company. One day, the poor buggers wake up and find they've got to shift to a new labour camp and get used to a new Master.
Way to go, Canada.

Re: Poor bus drivers
Maybe the whole thing was a giant conspiracy, and the plan all along was to find a way to get people to relocate to Winnipeg
Hook them on the Canadian lifestyle in Calgary, get some acclimitization to the cold done, and then after a while give them the boot and say, well, its either Winnipeg or back to Blighty

Re: Poor bus drivers
Depends on how badly you want to stay in Canada don't it.
I don't know what Winnipeg has going for it but I know two couples from Winnipeg one couldn't get back there quick enough and the other couple are just itching to go back too.
Perhaps we shouldn't knock it until we've tried it...EH?
