Advice on taking your pooch please
Hi there
thought i would start to get a plan together on transporting our labrador. Had a look on here and can see a few people have done it alone without an agent. I rang air canada who just referred me to James Cargo so rang them and how unhelpful they were ,I'm surprised he could be bothered to answer the phone. So I'm at a bit of a loss, could do with a bit of help either from those who have used an agent or not. I understand i need a fit to fly certif' rabies vac and a container. He is a big Lab so not sure if he has to go on a cargo plane or amongst the baggage. can't believe how unheplful they were. So relying on this trusty forum.
Thank you

We had no problems when we phoned Air Canada cargo for a rough quote, we are taking 2 dogs, small labradoodles and we were quoted £850 for both.
Look on the defra website it tells you what you need jab wise etc, mine just had their rabies jab yesterday cost £59, in 30 days time they go back for a blood test to check immunity £80 and if all ok they get issued their pet passport, yes they need a fit to fly certifacte from a vet before flying.
I got a lot of info from here just doing a search, hope that helps you a bit.

I will try air canada cargo again, was it at Heathrow airport? i wonder whether i got through to the wrong airport as the woman i spoke to insisted they didnt carry live cargo, and that i must use an agent, i wanted to say but i know you do - says so on BE forum.
Those prices are so much cheaper than using an agent aren't they! I shall not be put off and investigate further.
Can the fit to fly certificate be from your local vet?
Thanks again for your help and good luck with your journey.

We too used airpets as we wanted our dogs to come out a couple days after us as we would have signed for the house and moved in. They was great and answered everything by email and sorted everything out. Well worth it as far as we was concerned

Re: Advice on taking your pooch please
Thanks alot for that, I have just spoke to them and she seemed to know what i was talking about this time.
Have i got this right: -
Get the fit for flight cert' & rabies vac, already microchipped
Buy a crate
Deliver dog to the cargo check in at heathrow
Check ourselves in.
Pick him up from cargo at Halifax.
Is that it, am i missing something? I cant see how it would be any additional benefit to pay a pet carrier if we are all going on the same flight. Saves alot of smackeroonies. If thats the case I'm happy.
Thanks for your advice everyone.

Re: Advice on taking your pooch please
Hi
I have a large lab to take as well and have looked into it. I phoned Air Canada Cargo on 0208 750 8260, they wanted to know weight of dog (and dimensions) and kennel combined which mine was 45.58kg and the dimensions of the kennel. I was then quoted £810 with no mention of needing to go to any other company. They are happy to deal with you direct. They do give you a number to contact re finding out what documentation you need .01753 8685571, which is a pet transport place who are willing to give info to you even when you do not want to book their services.
For Canada: Dog must be microchipped, up to date with innoculations and have a Rabies Jab (you do not need to have them blood tested for immunity, just to be able to show they have had it and how long it is valid for) A few days before the flight you will need to get a fitness to fly cert from your vet. I think it has to be within 5 days of flying.
I sourced my IATA approved sky kennel from www.johnhumphris.com 0845 653 2145 and it was Extra large size 101.5x68x76cm and cost £141.10. The Kennel weighs 11kg on its own.
Your dog will be too big to go as excess baggage, which has to have a combined weight of 32kg or less for dog and kennel. Canadian affair do not fly pets during the summer and winter due to extremes of temperature. Their holds are not temperature controlled, unlike AC Cargo.
Hope all this is helpful to you

Hi
Forgot to add that you only need to have the blood test if you are going down the pet passport route, otherwise if you returned to UK they would have to go into quarantine.
lol

You need the bloods to come back to UK and skirt quarantine! you can get them done in Canada - you dont need the whole pet passport thing!

The kennel/crate must be roomy enough that the dog can stand and turn around. There are other regulations like ventilation on three sides but along as you are buying an approved kennel (i.e. a skykennel etc..) you wont have a problem.
The guys at Air Canada Cargo are very good (My 2 year old Staffie cross flew out on Fri). One thing to note is I was told on the phone the dog had to be booked in 4 hours before the flight at the latest, however when I arrived at Cargo early, I was told 4 hours before was the earliest they could legally take the dog. But other than this, they were excellent and my Staffie is now safe and sound in Edmonton. I wouldnt hesitate in using Air Canada to transport pets again.

Thanks James
Are the forms from DEFRA obtained once the flight is booked ? do Air Canada tell me which i need or do i have to initiate this myself? I am glad your dog is safe and sound after his journey.
Been thinking about the logistics of getting the family, cases and dog to the cargo with a huge crate. Can you drive there seperately before you unload family and cases etc. at the main terminal?
Thanks for your help

Air Canada Cargo is a fair distance away from the terminal so you will definitely want to drive there first
