Travel stopover insurance for elderly parents
Hi folks,
Having a major problem getting some insurance for my folks that doesn't cost more than the airfare! My dad is 81 and has been out here several times and loves it. He has a couple of health problems, but nothing huge - epilepsy and a pacemaker, both well under control.
They are coming out for a couple of months and therein lies the problem. We can get reasonable insurance for a couple of weeks, but not for 10 weeks. We actually don't need it while they are here and they would be happy to rely on the reciprocal agreement, but because they need to stop over - they need some cover for that.
Also would be happy to have a reasonable size excess too. Have tried all the usual places like saga, age concern, post office etc but the best so far is around £750 just for dad.
Does anyone know any insurance co that would give them just stop over cover?
Alternatively anyone got anything half decent from any other insurance company?
Any other ideas other than to travel without insurance at all?
Thanks loads

Re: Travel stopover insurance for elderly parents
My Grandparents had the same problem when they came out last year, they ended up getting a year worldwide cover and it was much cheaper than getting it for 3 months.
They just renewed it again, as it's worlwide so does them for all their sun package holidays to the med, lol.
So maybe try that?

For the year cover, worldwide, 2 people over 80, and it gave 4 prices ranging from 45 pounds to 69 pounds per person.

I know this may sound harsh, but how do you know you won't need it whilst they are here? The reciprocal agreement will cover some things, but if they are ill and need an ambulance for example they could be out of pocket thousands $'s. What if (heaven forbid) one of them dies, would they or their spouse be happy with them being buried in a "foreign" country, flying a body home to the UK would be horrendously expensive I imagine. Sorry to be morbid, we have elderly relatives staying regularly, but if you ever need travel/health insurance, then when your past 80 its certainly then!!

Thanks for the thought and don't think you are being morbid. They are both pretty fit for their age and if they become ill are covered for emergencies with the reciprocal - thats all they are worried about. We live in a country town and will drive them to the local hospital less than a km away. They have both decided a while ago that they want to have their ashes scattered here when they die, near my grandmother and aunt.
So got most things covered and just looking for a more reasonable cost of cover so that they can actually come and visit

I just did a quick random quote on this site for example http://insurance.essentialtravel.co.uk/

Have also emailed a couple of companies who do one way insurance as a poss and have found a visitors insurance from an OZ company that will cover both of them for $1380 that may end up a possibility
All other suggestions welcome!

Sorry, this one has over 64 (80 - 99 section)
http://www.columbusdirect.com/Travel...rcecode=TRADED
They do single trip too, and for Aus/NZ.
Did a quick quote and was under 100 pounds.

Thanks for this one. Columbus are my best quote so far at £760 for a couple of months cover for both of them but hoping to get something a wee bit cheaper if possible - especially as would be willing to take emergency reciprocal only cover in Oz?

Re: Travel stopover insurance for elderly parents
For anyone who does a search on this topic, thought I would post the results of a few days research on the subject.
It may be that my folks are in a unique situation, not requiring repatriation cover and being happy to accept emergency only treatment in Oz, but that doesn't really matter as I have not found it possible to get anyone to cover them just for this.
The problem
Being over 80, and requiring 60 days plus cover for one visit, rules out all annual policies I have found
Having two mild and under control pre-existing conditions hikes the premium substantially or you need to exclude the pre-existing conditions, which in my view is a recipe for rejecting a future claim - (" yes x problem was caused by your epilepsy)
One Way cover
Have found two uk companies that would provide one way cover out here, but no-one that would cover the return, once folks have been in the country for more than 29 days.
The outcome
Insured both parents with pre-existing for £650 with the following
http://www.rias.co.uk/
However quotes with other senior specialists ranged from this up to an eye watering £2300
We were seriously considering not insuring, but this is not a bad deal
Thanks for those who helped the search and hope this is of some use to those still searching
