TWP OR PR - DILEMMA?

TWP OR PR - DILEMMA?
Hi,
We have a slight dilemma and would welcome advice, and suggestions please?
We've more or less sold our property in the UK, and are looking to relocate to Calgary in Feb 2009.
I have a confirmed job offer in place, WP until 2011, LMO, AAIT Approval etc..
TWP Route.
I understand from posters here, and people who have kindly PM'd me from Calgary, that the employment climate is changing somewhat.
Say for example the climate gets worse, and you're on a TWP. I've heard stories where it's a case of "Tough you're out" Now if this were the case, say 3 to 4 months after landing, can you go and work for someone else?
I understand that the LMO and WP would need to be changed, but how easy and quick is that?
Plus, is it also a case of you may have to leave Canada should you not be able to find work?
Or, are you allowed to stay whilst waiting for PR, as long as you can financially support yourself?
We can support ourselves financially, and just wondered if you'd be asked to leave as you're on a TWP?
PR Route
The other option would be to carry on with the house sale here, and move into rental property in the UK, and then wait for our 90 day letter as we applied in October 2006.
Noting from posters on the forum, some who have applied after Oct 2006 have had their 90 day letter. So our thoughts are, that we've not received ours because on file at CHC in London we're on TWP?
We're estimating that if we did rent here and wait for PR, we'd be guessing at say another 5 to 8 months maybe??
But at least we could land with the security of PR, given the economic climate in Calgary at the moment, and the risks involved on a TWP.
Many thanks to all that PM'd me with regards to their stories on TWP and the risks involved - you know who you are
Thanking you in anticipation of your replies

Re: TWP OR PR - DILEMMA?
regarding your twp...you will be lucky to walk out of the airport with a 1yr twp some electricians get 6mths, we got 1yr, so it will depend on the guard at the time
Like i said in my PM there is jobs about, the link i gave you and his details shows there is, but it will depend on if you are only willing to stay in calgary or move for your job.
I always believe its who you know and not what you know here and find that true in stuff that me and the OH does.
If it helps, hubby due to sit red seal, if he passes he will get the PNP and we are advised that in 6/12mths we will be PR, his employer advised that they will get stuff sorted for us.
I think the final decision is yours, looking at jobs there is trades still needed, just depends on the risk side for you.
Hope that helps

The 'guard' has guidelines to follow with regard to how long a TWP is issued for, it's not dependent on is mood or some arbitrary decision. I was issued with a 3yr WP, luck has little to do with it.

I've just checked our permits, and for some strange reason I'd got confused with the dates. I thought the WP we received from CHC had 2011 stamped on it - I checked, it hasn't!
I'd got confused with the date on the LMO. As you say, I can now see why this is left to the guards discretion - which does seem to be a little hit and miss etc... considering I have the job offer, LMO, AAIT, funds, etc...
Let's suppose I get a real grump guard and he gives me 6 months! What happens after that? You're not booted out surely?

Re: TWP OR PR - DILEMMA?
Do you know what these guidlines are based on? Six months is not long, considering you've shipped a container to Canada, got yourself partially settled, and then your WP is about to expire!
Worst case, it's not renewed for whatever reason, given the economic climate in Canada at the moment this may be a factor considered by the officials - maybe?
To get a 3 year WP would at least give you some sort of security, especially as we're in the line for PR.
I wonder what warrants a 3 year WP to be issued?

Re: TWP OR PR - DILEMMA?
You have to sit the test within 6mths, that is the deal that you are coming here on, once test sat, you apply to extend the permit.....
ok friend did the same, they got 6mths at calgary, he sat his test, passed and applied for new permits, they have now got 3yr permits
believe me they will not get rid of a trades person unless you have been real naughty, dont worry
i know we did this when we was in the uk....but chill
the deal is that you are here and get that test sat and passed....pm sent and all the magic paperwork, but dont worry
