Again, what's the skinny on this place? Other than the lake stinks, it's full of religious people and all that...well it ain't that bad right?

That's an urban legend. Full strength beer is readily available in Utah.

I used to go there on business about once a month. It's actually a really nice city. There are many very nice neighborhoods, the schools are generally terrific, the cost of living is low, there's no traffic to speak of and the job market is one of the strongest in the US. Also, the Wasatch is beautiful, there's a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do in Utah and the nearby skiing is close to the best in the world.

There are exceptions, but overall the people can be a little hick-ish. It will be a complete culture shock coming from New England. Also, while Mormons are downright weird in their convictions but they are generally completely professional in their approach to work and are not preachy. there's also a lot of California immigrants in SLC. It's a western city but it can feel more West Coast than anything else some times.

I visited there for a couple of days this summer, and my view was rather mixed. The downtown area is well laid out and all the streets are six lanes wide (apparently the chief Mormon guy who was designing the city has a vision from God or summat). So that was nice. But once you get out of the downtown area there are a lot of really run-down areas which was not so good. As ABY said it's a good area for outdoors stuff and the mountains and scenery in the area are impressive (not as nice as Colorado or Wyoming though).

Other than that I can't really add any more.

yeah, I read about that, having to go to certain licensed premises, sounds even more hassle than down here in MA

A lot of positives about SLC:- climate, mountains, skiing, hiking etc. So if you are into that kind of thing, it's a great location. Plus SLC is a pretty pleasant place as well. But, if you aren't a Mormon, I think you'd feel left out of it socially. It really is the totally dominant institution socially, even with increased population growth into Utah.

I have been to both and would chose Utah I actually really liked the place very nice people, clean great scenery, I have friends that are out there and they are not mormons and have no problems what so ever,I think it is alot more excepted now that not all residents of Utah are mormons.

That's what I'm starting to find out, not quite such a scary place after all, and a couple of outfits out there, so less of gamble than louisiana...still a hell of a move all the same, but lot more affordable, not sure about the rental market though.

I agree with this 100% - my mother was born in Salt Lake City and felt it was hard to be a non-Mormon in that city. That doesn't mean that the people aren't nice, or that the scenery isn't beautiful ... but that you may feel like somewhat of an outsider.

I think Dolly might like it though - so she'd be the best one to ask.

No dis-respect but as you said you mum was born there so we are talking a few years ago, times change.
