Default NVQ 3, is it recognised?

Hi,

We are going to PEI at the end of the month, I am not planning to work straight away but would like to work in childcare in year or so (hopefully in a school as I will need to be at home for the school holidays)

I have NQV 3 in caring for children and young people and have been trying to get these assessed with WES. Unfortunately it is taking ages for them to reply (even though I have been emailing).

I just wondered if there are any other expats who have a job with this qualification. I also have 14 years experience of working with children with special needs.

Any help will be appreciated
Kerry

Hi Kerry

There is a site that you can check your qualifications in the UK against how they match up to Canadian ones - for sure someone will come back with the link. Did you try a search for Qualifications in this forum ? You could come up with the link that way.

I do know that Canada hasnt as yet embraced the NVQ structure as I have looked into this as I am an assessor - but from what I have heard there is talk that they will be introducing them in the next couple of years.

Another thing that you could do is contact an institute or local government and ask them if they could clarify this for you.

If you dont ask you dont get hun - my motto anyway

ps - think that to work in an "educational" workplace whether school or day care you could very well need a med (sorry dont know if you are going as PR or WP

Thanks Gaynor, Is it called local goverment in canada?

We are going over on hubby's work permit, so a medical shouldn't be a problem later on.

I am also an assessor but don't hold out any hope of that being recognised !!

Jobs are scarce and it's case of who you know and having Canadian experience on PEI. Jobs in schools are at a premium in most provinces; NVQ's are usually not recognised or permitted for school based work with children, but exceptions are made in areas of high need.

Hello,

I have an SVQ Early Years Care and Education level 3 (which is the same but the S stands for Scottish) I contacted the department of Education in NS eventually managed to get the right person to speak to. She then asked if I could send my qualifications to her, so I scanned them and posted them off, I now have a letter stating my qualifications are Canadian equivilent. She was very helpful.

If you are going anyway I think it will be easy to just apply for work and see how lucky you are as I got a job when I was over in October, and that was without the Canadian recognition. I think your experience will help. My job isn't with the school though and that may be a bit harder to get, it is in Scotland.

Emma
