I've generally noticed that the people who complain most about Melbourne's weather do not live in Melbourne or even in Victoria.
What do you think?

I have noticed that - plus people seem to think it's the same as the UK. We've only been here one winter and I know it's been a dry one - but I've been pleasantly surprised! There have been days when we've needed coats, but generally the girls have been in t/shirts with a cardi handy. When the sun's out it really warms up - 16oC in mid-winter is OK in my books. And the 12oC days don't seem too last long.
There have been cold nights, that's for sure and you really notice it in their poorly insulated houses.
I've also noticed, that even when it gets dark at 17:30 - it still seems to be bright until the last minute and then goes dark really quickly - so you don't seem to get that hour or so of twilight. Unless I'm going mad.....

It was a whirlwind tour, and no mistake. Just enough time to catch up with a few special people and visit a few special places.I'll be posting an account of my trip in the next few days.

I love the 4 seasons in 1 day thing. If it's raining in the morning, there's a fair chance it'll be sunny later.
I was talking to someone who has recently moved here from Sydney. She said that in Sydney if it's raining in the morning it's still raining in the afternoon.
Has anyone else noticed that it mostly rains at night?

We went this time last year for a month. The last time I had been was 15 years ago. Mmmmm it will be warm
.
We took skirts, 3/4 pants, shorts for kids, cossies, t-shirts, sandals.
What a bl@@dy shock!
We were freezing. We all had to get new coats and jeans to keep warm whilst being *tourists*.
Just goes to show how crap my memory is
Alright Vash. Long time no see. We expect a full documentary

The thing about Melbourne is that if you just come for a short visit / holiday and the weathers crap you're going to get a bad impression.
However from a personal point of view if you live and work here Melbournes got the most pleasant weather of the Capital Cities. Its not really that cold in the winter , it rarely feels like the winter cold we're used to and when the sun comes out which it does most days then it can be beautiful. In summer sure you get a few days in the high 30's or low 40's but it never stays like that for weeks and weeks like it can in some places or that draining humidity that you get in Queensland.

My only complaint, would be long dry hot summers.... IE: not enough moisture around in the hot months, drying everything out and causing a dusty/brownish (Aussies call it golden) enviornment. I doubt if many people will complain about this though There again, I dont like weather above 34 degrees, too tiring for everyday things.
Not to fond, of the lesser daylight hours, compared to the UK in summer either. Again not too many complain about that. Plus we probably get more light here than anyone else on the Mainland.
Winter is fine, save for lack of insulation in my house. Which is my fault. Winter seemed to be very short this year. Starting in earnest about the end of May and seemingly over about 10 to 14 days ago. About 10 weeks worth.

Agree that winter was short this year- but winter arrived (well rain) much earlier. In 2004, we had sun all the way through April and May, this April was a washout.
You don't get the consistent winter sun of Sydney or Brissy, and it is grey at times, but you get cycles of good weather and frankly I don't think it is cold. Your house may feel cold though.
Summer and Autumn gives Melbourne the best weather in the country in my opinion. Pleasant warm - to hot (very hot) with low humidity with occasional cool changes to ease the boredom.
