The Canadian Lager Review!
#1
Some light hearted fun - here are my ratings for the Canadian lagers I have tried to date. Interested to hear your verdicts, and possibly recommend some additional brews for me to try!
Labatt Blue: 8/10. A very easy going lager with no immediate aftertaste. It loses points on hangover factor, and I always wake up with a horrible taste in my mouth!
Labatt Genuine Draft: 7/10. Nice daytime drink.
Kokanee: 9/10. Possibly my favourite Canadian lager to date. Turn the fridge up to do this one justice.
Molson Canadian: 3/10. Possibly my least favourite Canadian lager to date. Gassy, bland and too much like Budweiser.
Kold: 8/10. Local brew, and one of the most adventurous of the Canadian beers - has alot of flavour.
Alberta Genuine Draft: 5/10. Not bad for a cheap beer, but tastes alot stronger than it is.
Molson Dry: 8/10. I was hooked on this one for a while, very nice lager and will not disappoint.
Carling Black Label: 4/10. Not to be confused with the English version, this one is classified as harsh, and is not very popular.
Labatt Wildcat Extra Strong: 8/10. Amazing - they squeezed in the extra % of alcohol, but you would not know.

Most Canadian beer is better that the crap they brew here in the U.S.
By far the best is Sleeman Cream Ale. It's brewed in Guelph, Ontario.
Try it, you won't be dissapointed.

I think that Canadian beer tastes like fizzy water with a tiny bit of flavouring added as a last minute thought. I only drink Corona when over there.

Simonhouse, have a favourite bar/pub in Calgary to work thru these beers of yours?

Upper Canada for me, although I am still working through a couple of cases of "Canadian" that seemed appropriate at my Citizenship party! Personally I would consider the Corona to be the fizzy pee beer out of all those mentioned so far! Only marginally more tasty than Bud or Coors. Give me a nice pint of Woodforde Wherry anyday though, but when in rome...
I can't tell much difference between Blue and Canadian, so maybe I am not qualified to judge in this survey! As far as I am concerned its like the Ford / Chevy debate... its a truck, they are all basically the same when you get into the mass volume ones.

Honourable mentions should go to Rickards Red and Alexander Keiths

Found a place in Toronto called Beer Markt (opposite the Novotel) - 50 on tap beers and over 100 bottles to choose from on their 'Beer Menu'...

I have to agree, both my wife & I really enjoyed Kokanee in Banff. I just hope we can get it in Toronto when we arrive on Friday

Both seem to carry more imports than Canadian beers though, but that suits me just fine as I am a German beeraholic.

Lots of nice microbreweries producing lots of nice ales.... why go with the gassy lagers! (although from your list I'd probably pick a Molson Dry)

I have found most fo the big beers in canada lacking flavour. Tried kokanee and found it rather flat and bland, Sleemans amber is nice, but one of my favourites is Pipers Pale Ale, lots of flavour
