I've said for ages the shame policy is a easy way to get non-payers to tow the line, but then again some will take it as there 15 minutes of fame. Another great one is to have shoplifters pictures on shop windows saying that they are banned for being a thief.

Thats my real big concern about it too. Remember The Sun publishing paedofiles pics ?
Its fine to say name and shame and if people are guilty through greed or just dont care then fine, but what about those in a bad situation through no fault of their own? How many of those ratepayers in arrears are merely some poor woman dumped on her own with kids? Or lost their job through illness or some other reason not hteir fault. You need to be careful doing things like this.

I agree, it needs to be done with care - for example, my MIL is at present in hosptal, supposed to be resting and getting better, but is instead fretting herself stupid over how she is going to pay her rates bill - and if we pay it, over how she is going to pay us back while shes laid up.
If she thought she was likely to make the papers for non-payment the worry could finish her off.

Where I work we have all these PC rules but the guys are shockingly un-PC. I've come to realise that it's not because they are rude or insensitive, but rather that they honestly aren't aware of differences. Not where I work anyway, it's like the UN in there

There are some things they do where I work that would get you hung/strung and quartered in UK :scared:
I don't think they mean to be rude or abrasive however I do think they are insensitive. Subtlety is not in their vocabulary.

The day after I got citizenship I said something really stupid & my boss commented; "I knew that lobotomy would have an affect on you."
I suppose it can be very insensitive, especially if it's your toes they are treading on, but I've learnt to let it go and not really take it seriously. I honestly don't think they even think about it most of the time, but if I think they mean it they'd get it from me. I prefer that people's reactions modify other's actions rather than a set of stupid PC rules which are most of the time stupid & unrealistic anyway. The only time I get really narky is if they get cruel and unusual. We've got a slightly "slow" guy who works with us & one guy is always making a fool out of him. So I stepped up to him one day & said quietly in his ear; "You're not really a very nice person, are you?"
He's been behaving ever since. People tell me I can be seriously scary at times and I like to use it when called upon

And there is no PC brigade over here
?
And there is no instances of crazy rules and regs?
Theres as much crap over here as there is n the UK a big difference is the size of the population against the ranks of bureaucrats.
I love living in Australia but there are as many stupid and idiotic things here as in the UK. The secret is not to let what doesn't effect you, bother you.

Warning to the guys, and the women that enjoy this kind of Banter. Once the lesbians get in they start complaining. Luckily most of our Night Shift ladies seem to be able to get them to calm down.
Takes a right tounge lashing though.

And yep, I brought the PC thing in because in this instance ....and in my opinion...it is true. This would NEVER happen in the UK and I'm proud the Aussies could be arsed cos, as I said, for once the good guys win.
That's not to say there are occasions here that PC correctness doesn't happen.
Where did I say that?
Nor is it to say silly rules don't exsist here.

Are you saying it's OK to talk / have banter like people did in the 70's era for e.g. like Alf Garnet...... and it's only lesbian women who object with this type of mentality?

Oh dear. You want to raise that old chestnut again, when it literally happened months ago. A one off posting, that actually I am ashamed to say I was put up to by someone on this site who likes to be seen as a lovely poster. And I fell for it when I should have known better than to be prodded to say something that they didn't have the guts to. Amazing how many people are two faced like that isn't it HUP....ironically you shoot the messenger....and I accept I got what I asked for.
I apologised at the time and it has nothing at all to do with you.
And whilst you take your "holier than though" attitude....
You've never said anything and then had to say sorry then?
Well then.....that makes you a far better person than me.
You go to heaven, I go to hell.
Hows about you get over it and you just ignore my posts then
No worries

Not as brilliant as what one village in India decided to do
. Drumming tax sense into evaders
By Omer Farooq
BBC News, Hyderabad
Tax evaders in a southern Indian city are having cash beaten out of them - by troupes of drummers.
Authorities in the city of Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh state are sending drummers around to create a noise outside homes until evaders cough up.
Officials say they recouped 200,000 rupees ($4,600) on the first day.
Harried residents emerged from their homes to be told by accompanying tax collectors to pay up or continue facing the music.
Embarrassment
Rajahmundry, about 500km (300 miles) east of state capital Hyderabad, is a major city in the state's East Godavari district.
Municipal commissioner of Rajahmundry city, TSR Anjaneyulu, told the BBC he had to resort to the unusual method as all other efforts to recover the tax had failed.
The commissioner said dues had risen to up to 50m rupees.
The municipal corporation hired the service of 10 drummers and sent them to 10 different residential and commercial areas on Friday morning, along with a tax collector and other officials.
Mr Anjaneyulu said that during the campaign the drummers would not say anything but would beat the drums non-stop outside houses pointed out by the officials.
He said he was confident people would pay up to avoid embarrassment as everybody now knew that the drums meant there was a tax evader inside.
In addition to the 200,000 rupee first-day revenue, many more people had come forward with a promise to pay up in a few days, Mr Anjaneyulu said.
Before the campaign, the authorities had compiled and published a list of evaders, with sums ranging from 1,000 rupees to 100,000.
Mr Anjaneyulu said the cash was needed to improve the city's growth, adding that in the past three years infrastructure had improved considerably.
Cheers
