Re: average nurse wages queensland
That is very interesting to know, and funny you should say that as the guy I was talking to from QLD health took me to one side and said that I should go online to register an expression of interest, so perhaps that is why he said so, at the time I had assumed that it was because I was early on in the application process, but it may have had more to do with what you said. Good for everyone to be aware of and to check out
I have been told to bring my statements of service with me when I go to HR in the Mater to start work and I will be paid as per my years of experience, how annoying would it be to discover you were only getting basic pay after uping sticks and moving to the other side of the world!
I wonder if this is the situation when people go on the 457 visas?
I went to the EXPO around September 09 and was told by QLD Health that jobs in Brisbane are very competitive but as I had a Theatre background I would not find too much trouble getting work with them. He also told me to submit an EOI online (which I ave not done yet). Did we talk to the same bloke? The man I spoke to had red hair and there was a woman with him from Townsville.

So I think I'll go with what she said - don't fancy getting tied into base grade pay if it can be avoided - you expect to have to go down the scale but not to the very bottom.

That was the one ( we went to Manchester central!) - he never mentioned to me that if you go via EOI that a basic grade rate of pay would be the case, but the Nursing Officer I spoke to online/telephone was VERY clear this was the case! She said she wanted to make it clear because in the past Nurses who joined her team and who weren't aware felt undervalued, and soon became disgruntled! She wanted to be realistic to help with staff retention - her advice to me was to start to apply for live posts 4 months prior to when start date would be. If no jobs advertised she suggested CV's to Nursing officers of particular areas.

Go on QLD Health jobs - when you see a post in the area/speciality you are after, make a note of their details ready for when I need them. This is fine for me cos I have got a very specific locality and job roles I am after but if you were vague about what region you wanted and had a very popular job role, the job would be vast! Good luck whatever you decide

I'm not saying EOI isn't good for some - I suppose it depends on how much you are likely to lose by accepting a base grade post - obviously it is a 'foot in the door' and if your not going to lose much, this is worth it. I'm of the mind that if you go to a new country, you would need to expect to drop down a few levels but not right back to square one! (hopefully)

I've got various specialities so am a bit quirky - General and Paediatric trained, also Community - School Nursing and Health Visiting - now a Safeguarding Children specialist - so yet to decide which route I will pursue, hence my personal contact with Nursing officers to have those debates!! Community jobs aren't in abundance, and so different to here in Uk so need to consider all routes!!

Yep that was the guy I talked to as well... so the advice is go for actual jobs not just random placement, good to know. I wonder how they can justify doing that?
Rahrah, would love to hear more about how you get on when you get over there, as ultimately the community paediatric line is something that I am thinking of, I'm 9 years qualified, and a girl who worked in our place who was 3 years more junior than me is now in Melbourne in a community based nurse specialist post! She went as a regular staff nurse and has worked her way up really quickly.
Lets keep our fingers crossed that the changes to be announced on Monday do not affect us 175 people too much .
