Can we ship our stuff out before sorting out visa/permit
Hi
We're new to this so bear with us....
We have a million questions but I'll start with this one. We plan to take a risk and pack up all our stuff, head out to NZ on a holiday visa in the hope that hubby will secure a job soon after we've arrived and then we'll do our visa application which will hopefully all be fine and we'll live happily ever after in NZ!
Question:
Can we ship our stuff out from UK to Auckland without having 'proper' visas sorted out? I have heard that you have to have a visa or permit (a holiday visa not enough) before shipping can be released from UK. The problem is that this means that once we do get job/visa sorted we have to then wait another three months or so for the shipment to arrive.
Thanks in advance....

I'm afraid your own research is correct, need the work visa first.

Re: IT Qualifications - EOI
Thanks for that.
My hubby works in the IT Industry in London at the moment. What is the IT Job market like in NZ? Do you think he will find a job within 3 months? He has got his EOI ready online, but only scores 90 points as his IT Qualifications are not recognized by the skilled migrant visa application. He has sent off for NZ confirmation to the NZQA and is now awaiting a reply. What are the NZQA like? Can they confirm these kind of IT Trade Qualifications?
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Didn't send to much apart from 1 cubic metre and 2 large cats. Were told that customs could be awkward but we had no dramas. Cats and belongings arrived 3 months before we got our visa. Mine probably wasn't the safest way though.

Welcome to the forum If your skills are on the NZIS jobs shortage list and you're hell bent on getting here then it may pay off, but I would advise a little caution. We (me, OH and son) came over on hol visa but kept furniture in storage until we were ready for them. Because of past med history and NZIS incompetence there were times when we thought we'd have to go home but we fought tooth and nail and 4-months after arriving we got our PR. 6 months later we found the area, school and house that we wanted then moved the furniture over. Good luck with what ever you decide.

There is an exemption from gst and import duty if one has a work permit or PR. The exemption applies to your household goods which are for your own personal use
If you don't have the above then customs will charge you gst and an import duty deposit on your container of goods once they arrive.
The amount of $$ charged will vary but the value of the effects, their age and quantity will all be taken into consideration.
This deposit will be refunded once you are issued with permanent residency status, a work permit for more than one year, or arrive in New Zealand with the authority to take up permanent residency
Proof plus ID is required to show that one meets the necessary criteria
Containers on the whole take 6 weeks to arrive.
Part containers take quite a bit longer.
Your goods could be stored in the UK by your shippers until you are in a position to take legal delivery of them.

Re: Can we ship our stuff out before sorting out visa/permit
It is possible. Know of others who have done this and didn't have to pay the GST, probably as by the time their container was due in (took 12 weeks!) they had found work and obtained work visas. Not the best way perhaps and not something I'd do myself, but certainly not impossible.

Re: Can we ship our stuff out before sorting out visa/permit
We came out on Visitors Visa and had our stuff shipped out before we had our permits. We did, however, have a job offer just not the permits. Only problem was, they shipped it in just my name and my hubby was the one with the permit when our container arrived, so we had to pay $1000 deposit to Customs (into an interest account I must add) for them to release our stuff to us. Once my permit came through I had to take my receipt of payment, passport and proof of address with me to claim this back. When you take your ID in, they will issue you a cheque of your deposit plus interest (don't get giddy, our was only $8 LOL) and you should receive this approx. 8 weeks later. They had our deposit for approx. 2 months as my hubby had some medical issues that needed sorting before permits were issued then mine were delayed due to the losing my medical stuff
So, in a nutshell, yes it can be done but it's very risky!
