Air Con - Which is best?

Re: Air Con - Which is best?
I have been quoted for a Panasonic 14.50 kW 1000/Sec Inverter ducted reverse cycle unit with return Air filter, electrostatic Filtration (30% cleaner air) and exact Air Regulators.
Does anybody else have Panasonic, and is it OK?
It has 5 year warranty for the machine, and 10 years for components

Comparison between Daikin FDYQ160K and Panasonic CS-F50DD1E5/CU-L50DBE5...
Capacity cooling Daikin 1.5kw more, Daikin's Airflow is greater by 100 litres, Outdoor noise level Daikin 50/52, Panasonic 55/57 both measured from front of unit 1 metre. Daikin 5 dba quieter this is standard operation, with Daikin's night mode operation can be as low as 45 Dba.
Other differences are Indoor fan coil Daikin Height 360, Panasonic 430 high, Daikin max pipe run 75 mtres, Panasonic 50 mtres.
We sell both and the Daikin is a superior unit (particularly when it comes to aftersales), though dearer.

Time to reopen this bad boy again
We want to get air con, the house is two storeys and has quite a cool downstairs.
As putting ducted on all levels is going to be a challenge we were thinking of R/C Air Con for the 4 bedrooms upstairs and maybe the landing area. Leave the downstairs as is.
Number of reasons:
1) The whole hot air rises theory. cool air pushes down stairs to the bottom floor.
2) The logistics aspect of putting ducted downstairs looks very very hard. View of house is below:
http://maps.google.com/
135 Bridgewater Drive Kallaroo
3) Our outside area is extensively covered so it seems to keep cool when the weather gets warm
4) There has been no air con. installed for over 20 years (go figure)
5) We should get a sea breeze (about 1.5K from sea and have direct sight). In theory breeze should roll up the hill to our prop.
6) We have an open fire for heating up the living area during winter as well.
Need some input before the sales guys come aorund and squeeze our money sponge dry

Re: Air Con - Which is best?
Out of all those who have air con, could you say which you have from the list (or something different if I have missed anything out) and also what you feel the advantages/disadvantages are i.e efficiency/cost effectiveness, how good it does the job etc.
We will be moving into our new house around September time, and all it will have is batt insulation, which I know for a fact will not be much good for cooling/keeping the place warm.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as at the moment we have an idea of what we may go for, but need to look at other options,
TIA

I've gone with the company St Georges Girl recommended. He seems a really nice bloke, and has given me a very competitive quote

Re: Air Con - Which is best?
Pleased to hear that A. He really is a decent bloke and will not compromise by using poor quality materials to cut costs like some. Let me know how it goes.

Re: Air Con - Which is best?
It wont matter what aircon you have if you have floor to cieling single glazing and no insulation. A lot of places ive been in out here could really benefit from proper insulation but the ozzies seem completely devoid of it. Very strange!

Hi Tiawamutu,
We moved into our new house in Hervey Bay 4 weeks ago. We had ducted reverse cycle installed with 8 ceiling vents split into 6 zones. It has been quite chilly and with being used to 47c couldn't resist using the heating in he mornings and evenings. We are totally impressed! The response is virtually instant far advanced over the radiator system used in the UK.
This system cost us approx $11,500 through the builder (Perry Homes).

Gillian

Re: Air Con - Which is best?
We currently have ducted in our place and one thing to think about is with ours it is either on in all rooms or off in all rooms. This to me seems a huge waste as your usually only in one place at a time and I think our leccy bill will show this. I dont know if ours is an old system and the new ones can control independent rooms or not but I prefered the wall mounted units in our previous place if we were in the living room that one and that one only went on if we were off to bed the one in the bedroom went on? it seemed alot more practical and money wise to us?

Re: Air Con - Which is best?
Just because you shut some zones down doesn't necessarily mean you save money... In almost all systems the effect that has is to pump more air into the open areas and not as many assume to cause the fancoil to run slower...
Temperature sensing is important... most systems will have a temperature sensor at the return air and at the control panel... not much use if you're planing on running your system consistently with the only zones open being in places other than that... If you do think you'll be consistently running zones on their own that are not next to a standard temperature sensor then get another one installed...
Just my 2c...

A couple of points worth noting for people with multi-zoned ducted systems or those thinking about it...

Eventually, we got the air con installed
Went with the company St George's Girl recommended, and are 100% happy
I would definitely say now, that ducted reverse cycle is the way to go
