Default Shipping costs

Hi, new to forum so not sure where to post this (apologies!).

My Aus partner and I are planning on moving out to Brisbane as soon as the visas go through (so a while then!).
Living in rented accomodation with no kids we're fairly fleet of foot, but...

Just sorting out out household gear and we've got a lot of it that would either need replacing or could be shipped.

Can anyone recommend a good international removers, or indeed give some idea of costs of removing a two bedroom house's worth of junk (not the furniture though).
Better still, is it possible to get a container and fill it one's self? (And how much would that cost?).

Many thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy

this is somethign i am looking into just now, and am comng back with one answer ... expensive

from what i can see, the more you ship, the less it costs pro rata. One box thats 18*18*18 inches, costs about £150, whereas 5 costs £350, and i was told between 10 and 14 weeks, and then you would have to go to pick them up, and thats without insurance!! surely there must be a cheaper way ..

if anyone wants to share how they shipped their stuff, then please do

That's what I've found. Hence thinking that if we're going to have to spend a couple of grand+ moving then I'd want a container and load the lot.
But it all seems to boil down to these tissue box sized boxes - no good for a mountain bike collection (and no not selling them!!!).

Help from the knowledgable needed!!

hi
we are shipping most of our stuff with us, after reading millions of threads we have decided to take the lot, instead of replacing when we get there, it seems to me that you would get hardly anything for your stuff here and to replace it all shopping somewhere that is unfamiliar to you would cost a bomb!
so we are going to do a 20" container, self load, the company i found the cheapest so far was RH freight i think they are in felixstowe, you can find them on the net. i spoke to a chap called danny who was very helpful. we did toy with the idea of shipping our car, but to be honest i read everything i found on the net about it and still could not understand it it all, seemed a bit complicated and expensive to me.

hi,if anyone planning to ship to Brisbane via d.i.y method, then below is a quote i received from a local agent in Brisbane who can do all the handling for you, once your goods have arrived at port.

i have also had a quote for £1550 net,to ship a 20ft container ,loading at London residence to Brisbane port, with a reputable shipping line(m.i.s.c.).

i personally think that these charges +container charge is still lot cheaper way,of getting my goods across, than using the professional big guys, who basically do the same job anyway, and can charge upto £5000 for same thing.

hope the quote below is of interest to someone,

regards
varsani

Thanks for this, and the post above. All very confusing. And although we've probably not got the most kit in the world, it seems sensible to ship most if not all rather than have to get more on arrival.
Easier for us though in some ways, as we'll be moving to where the other half's family live - but then we'll have little personal space I suppose!
