Hang on? Not bloody likely! Already done the dirty deed.

What is your position now regarding your application?

Hi Paula,

Fingers crossed indeed. Like you say, with them being doctors it shouldn't be a problem, but if you're like me, you won't believe a thing until you've exchanged.

Have you considered doing the conveyancing yourself? I just saved £700+vat (the cheapest quote) by doing it myself. Quite straight forward really although I was in the lucky position of not having a mortgage which can cause some complications apparently because the lenders have to get their own conveyancers involved for which, of course, there is a charge, but I guess you'd have to pay that anyway (or maybe not, I don't know). Mind you, if you go for a conveyancer rather than a solicitor, it is much cheaper anyway and a lot of them seem to offer fixed prices on the internet and some don't even charge if you don't get to completion which is very good as that is the most complicated stage, and the most likely to cause problems.

Glad to see you are still with us. I'd noticed you'd been a little quiet, but it's quite dis-heartening when you are waiting on something like selling a house (or waiting for the friggin visa).

I see Badri has arrived in Brisbane. Nice to see. Good on him. That certainly happened quickly.

Well, I'm now about £40K worse off thanks to the bond and the rubbish rate, but at least it's done now. I wasn't going to hang around and hope the rate went back up, although it has gone up pretty well today.

Thanks everyone. Yes Loidy, it came in the same A4 yellow envelope as a previous letter I received when they asked for more info on a previous employer in April. Looks a lot like the envelopes that play.com use, which has caught me out several times thinking I had a letter from DIMIA which turned out to be a DVD I had ordered and forgotten about (I guess that description only helps if you use play.com)

Well, it takes about 2 weeks for DIMIA to receive confirmation from the state that I have placed the bond and then, I guess, a week or so after that for the document to wind itself through the DIMIA cogs to land on the COs desk. Hopefully then..... (sighs slowly thinking of what it must feel like to get a visa grant)

For all your information, OzForex gave a better rate than HIFX. I asked for their rate and the inter bank spot rate. From these 2 figures you can see the profit they are making. OzForex took about less than half what HIFX were going to take. I think it all depends how much you exchange. I have a feeling that OzForex take into account how much in total you are likely to exchange, whereas HIFX take into account how much you are changing in each individual deal, but I could be wrong about that. Either way, I thought it would be useful for you all to know.

Good luck for Wednesday. Do let us know what they say.

We were lucky with the house. We ended up having 20 viewings between March and May which, looking at others on here, was excellent. The buyers are currently in rented, so don't want to complete until the end of August. Talk about lucky for us! We've exchanged, which was the nerve racking stage as there is no come back during that time, but got through exchange about 2 weeks ago thank goodness. Saying that, selling the house is no good without a visa to go with it.

Not sure which is worse. Having a visa but having to wait to sell a house, or exchanging contracts on your house and still having no visa (so not really knowing if you will be going to Oz or not).

I'm rabbiting. Sorry. Good luck for Wednesday (again)

Sorry to be the pessimist, but I'm still not convinced about this 1st July thing. I know, for instance, that my first CO disappeared onto indefinite leave on 7th June, now my current CO is on leave until 13th July, so that probably means there are a fair number of us that won't hear anything until then at least.
