hi guys just wanted to find out how busy if at all wall and floor tilers are in auz? for my own reasons perth but would be nice to hear about all areas.

As wall and floor tiler has stayed on the CSL i'm interested to see how come. Is there still such a shortage of trained tilers over there?

Apparently not. They are all too busy tiling.

My hubby is one on the GC. We moved in June last year and apart from 2 weeks in Jan he has worked ever since. However with all trades it is slowing down here too. If you are good I think you can work work anywhere but there is not an absolute shortage of them and he has been a tiler for 25 years and thinks the standard of tiling here is high. Just ask if you need anymore info.

I am a tiler and have been here since August 2008.
I got work here within a couple of weeks and that was due to having to wait for my tax number. When I arrived there were around 2 jobs in the West Australian on a Wednesday and Saturday and now there are usually none. It has slowed so much even in the short time I have been here. As someone said if you are good then you will get work but you need to get your foot in the door which luckily I did.
I am busy and many others I know are most of the time but it is patchy with the odd very quiet week.
If you are coming over with a few quid then it probably won't matter but all I am saying is be prepared for it to be slow.

This is not a post trying to put you or anyone off which is usually what we are branded but a reflection of how it is in Perth at the moment, go for it you will be fine.

Totally agree with you FM, Ive found that it never rains unless it pours, but work is work and a hell of a lot is of it is Who You Know!!!
Thank you for putting me forward for the Maddington job, got another starting thursday with them, ypical have loads backing up our way now, and a few nice cash ones as well.
Gonna make the most of it while its here 10 hr days not a problem for me (apparently it is with a few locals) though!

Just a question to the tilers out there.......we own a tiling business in South Africa and work on cash and carry basis.Our tilers are all sub-contractors that we refer business to from our customers.

Do you find that your work comes this way too or do you advertise yourselves in the paper etc............just wondering TIA

I do not advertise but get most of my work through a tile shop although there are plenty that dop advertise.

Thanks FM........may your workload be plentifulWe are looking into doing the same thing or similar(that we don in S.Africa) on Sunshine Coast QLD,but have had varying thoughts on the subject.The trouble is finding reliable contractors that genuinly want the work rather than those that duck as soon as the surfs up,which is bad for any business.Seems like peoples work ethic varies greatly in OZ,guess we will be safe with pomes then

We own a Tiling business in Adelaide S.A. and at present there is plenty of work.If you are a good tradesperson you will have no problem finding work !!!!! I think this would apply to most of Oz...

how did you guys find the TRA? as hard work as I've heard? and did any of you do an AQF III before applying?

oh and is that pic you at the Flora London Marathon FM? I'm running it Sunday. VERY nervous!!

The TRA is a little time consuming and I did not do AQF III before applying and do not know what that is. The rules change all the time so I am not sure what it is like today although mine was only done 3 years ago.

The picture is of me running in the 2008 FLM. I got my place through the running club I was in at the Christmas raffle so was lucky to win. I still ran it for The Anthony Nolan Trust as it is a charity close to my heart. Are you doing it for charity or did you get a ballot place?
I was nervous but if you have trained you will be alright. Have you got your name on your vest at the expo and if not get it on your vest you will be blown away on the day by the very good spectators in London.
My charity co-ordinator said it would be one of the most memorable experiences of my life and I did not think it would but it blew me away, even now the hairs on my neck have stood up just thinking about last year.

Good luck and don't get too hung up on your time you will lose lot's of minutes with the crowds and it does not ease much for the whole 26.2 miles, unless you are fast and in an early pen just take it in and enjoy what will indeed be a memorable day of your life. We've just been granted our visa and fly out to Melbourne in August. OH is a wall and floor tiler and passed his TRA last November. He did his AQF III first as TRA said his NVQ II was not enough and, as you probably know, you can't apply with just experience only any more. He actually found the AQF easier than the NVQ and did it all within a month.

Nearer the time we will email local bathroom, kitchen and tile shops and he will probably advertise once we (and his tools) get there.

He's also ran the last 3 London Marathons and we've been down to watch him each time. You tilers must be a fit bunch!!! It's an amazing day and very uplifting - loads of support all the way around. Do get your name on your shirt like FM says and you'll hear your name being shouted out all day. And remember to smile at the cameras!! We always get a spot at around 23miles - next to Temple Tube station, on top of the Walkabout pub! We find everyone needs lots of support there and OH always knows where to look for us as he goes past - we've managed to see him and wave every time. He's not doing it this year as we've so much going on - he's gutted! Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

AQF III is as nickynush mentioned the Australian version of an NVQ II but to gain one in oz takes 2 years. you can however be assessed for one over here but you need to prove 4 years exsperiance.

as for us tilers being a fit lot, I suppose we are but you wouldnt think so with all the kneeling!
