Default Buying a TV before we go

Hi,

We were thinking of purchasing a television before leaving for Australia. I have pasted the spec of the TV below. Does anybody know if it will actually work in Australia. I heard somewhere that they use NTSC instead of PAL but i'm not too hot on this side of things.

Audio type SRS TruSurround XT , A2/Nicam Stereo Total speaker power 20 Watts
Text services teletext AV Input/Output 2 x scart , S-Video , PC Connector , HDMI
Sleep timer With sleep timer Other features Remote Control
Product colour Black Height 54.8cm
Depth 8cm Width 80cm
Weight 15.6kg

Thanks

Lee

Dont know much about techie TV stuff but I know that you dont normally get the sound on UK TV over here.

I would save your money until you get here. Not sure what you pay for a TV in the UK anymore but TV's over here are real cheap.

Check out a current Harvey Norman cataloge for an idea on prices

The chances are they will not work. Australia use a different type PAL than the uk so you might get pictures but no sound.

You can hook them up to a Freeview or Cable/Sat box and they will work.

Just to clear a few things up:

- You only tend to get problems with no sound on older model TV's (this can be solved with a set top box or DVD/video recorder)

- TV's are slightly cheaper over here.

- You have to take into account, if you don't declare items under a year old, and they find them, you may be fined. We declared our TV and still had to pay around $300 import tax! :curse: (so you don't win either way! )

- Australia use PAL which is the same as the UK.

We bought an LCD TV just 9 months before we came. It works perfectly, and we even get some text facilities on some of the channels.

The one you described should be fine

Yes our large tv worked fine we brought it about 5 years ago. The smaller and older tv worked too but only with a video recorder.

Thanks everyone for their help. My son spilt juice on our current one so the insurance company have just issued us with vouchers to get another one.

Cheers

You know I said our TV was fine?

I spoke too soon!

Was watching TV this afternoon, and heard what sounded like a light bulb exploding, then the TV switched it'self off

Tried to switch it back on and nothing happened apart from the green light on the bottom right of the TV came on. Then it switched it'self off again.

We've been here six months and our nearly new LCD TV is f****d!

I don't know wether the long journey over has taken it's toll, or wether it would have happened anyway. We have a surge protector on it as well, so couldn't have been that.

We have extended insurance on it, and we were told it would be valid over here. I really do hope it is, or there's £2000 down the drain!

I have now come to the conclusion it's best to buy when you get here, and only wish we'd done that in the first place

As to paying import duty on it for being under 12 months old - take it out the box, remove all packaging, cable ties and anything else. Then let your packers pack it for you. No nobody knows its under 12 months old except you....

Don't say that it works fine, as I did, and the next minute our LG blew up!

Our Tv had the date on the back of it, which you couldn't remove. Believe me AQIS open things, and will charge you wherever they can!

Have just looked at this site, love the way you can turn the pages on the catalalogue.
We will be buying a new t.v out there.
Ours went on the blink last year not that old. We just got a basic 28" widescreen as I told hubby he could get big flat screen all singing one when we move. I was so peed off that we had to get another one last year.
moan over.
