Default Special Needs Schooling In Canada

My Daughter has a form of Autism (Aspergers) which may prove to be difficult in our move to Canada.

Does anyone have experience of schooling support for special needs children. Is it any better / worse than the UK ? Any particular area's which are reccommended?

I really dont know how things are in England, but my friend's son has cerebral palsy and he has been integrated into a regular school for years. He does have difficulty in school and certainly is not on a level with children his own age.

That is a link to Wascana Rehab centre where he went to school when he was younger. You might be able to get some idea from there. Of course I am only talking about Regina.

It would be my guess that there would be help all over Canada but I will leave it to others who really know to reply to that.

It really depends where you live - not sure where the last poster lives, but in some areas in BC you will be whistling in the wind for special needs education. If your child has a defined autism diagnosis that is confirmed in BC for example, your child would qualify for Community Living Services (i.e.$$$) that provide money to the families to hire the help that your child might need. On the other hand, Aspergers is a precarious diagnosis that is often considered borderline and no money or teaching assistants are forthcoming from anywhere. Pick your residential area well, and you should be OK. In general, the services for autistic children are better than in the UK. There are, however, many therapists and TA's here who do not have the autism specific training your child might need. Ask a lot of questions!
