To award good posts, or just for the heck of it, members of British Expats can give Reputation Points (Karma) to other members. For most people on BE the concept of Karma is pretty clear, though there are still a lot (and there always will be) who have loads of questions about Reputation / Karma. So for everyone who is interested I will try to explain how it all works.
How do we give karma?
To give karma to a post you like, or a poster you want to give to, click on the little blue box in the bottom left corner of one of his/her posts (the blue box with the word KARMA in it).
How often can we give?
We all have the ability to give karma five times a day. That is, loaded karma. But you must have made at least 100 posts on British Expats before your karma will be loaded. If your post count is less than 100 the karma you give away will be worthless (0 points). Worthless karma is referred to as: blank. The receiver will notice this if he/she looks at his/her list of Latest Reputation Received.
Where can I find my Latest Received Reputation?
To find this list, click on My Profile in the pink bar near the top of your screen. You will then find a blue bar on your screen with the words Latest Reputation Received. Under this bar you can find the last ten donations made to you. If you don’t see these donations, click on the plus-sign at the right side in the bar. Worthless (blank) karma shows up with a grey box, whereas loaded karma comes with a blue box.
How do you know if the karma you give will be loaded, or a blank?
As I said, we can give loaded karma five times a day. Each of these five donations takes 24 hours to reload. If you don’t wait the full 24 hours before you give karma to someone, it will turn out to be a blank. Only your last five donations are taken into account! If you give karma to five people at 10am and you try to do that again at 10pm, the donations you made at 10 pm will be blanks because less than 24 hours have passed since your last donations. Now you will have to wait 24 hours before you’re fully loaded again, so you must wait till after 10pm tomorrow before giving karma or it will still be blank.
What means: spreading?
To prevent you from giving karma to the same person five times a day there’s a rule incorporated that says that we will have to spread some Reputation around before giving it to X again. If you want to give to X again, you will have to give to 25 other (all different) posters before you can do so.
How much is your karma worth?
Like I wrote earlier, until you have made at least 100 posts your karma will be worthless, regardless of much karma you have received before your 100th post. As a rule of thumb the value of your donation is 1% of your total Reputation Points plus 0,1% of your post count with both of these results round up. A poster with 25638 Reputation Points and 4286 posts will give 257 points (= 1% of 25638, rounded up) plus 5 points (= 0,1% of 4286, rounded up) which equals 262 points.
How am I doing as opposed to the other posters?
To find the list with the Reputation ranking, click on Member List in the pink bar at the top of your screen, then click on the word Reputation in the second pink bar from above. Now find your own username.
