Get there early, because they go on a first-come, first-served basis and we
got sent out to return at 3pm with a 9am appointment. If you're travelling
to LA for the first time, you'll find it's pretty easy to get around, pretty
pretty damned expensive, too. If you rent a car, which is generally the
best way to go because public transit there sucks and it's hard to find
taxis, there is a garage on South Hope just south of 6th St on the east side
that is pretty cheap, it was $8 flat rate, beats pretty much everything in
the area - at first we parked in AON Center which was $2.35/15 minutes!

Nick, I would truly appreciate it if you could email me privately.
I'd like to ask more about your particular interview, since my girl
has applied the same way as yours. In light of the recent, disturbing
"interviews" that some applicants have been very unlucky in
experiencing, it would be nice to know exactly what was asked and not
asked in your particular case. I know that you've told me in the past
that there wasn't much to it--but that was then, and this is now--and
things have seemed to get a lot more "sticky" and unpredictable with
CIC!

(Of course, since your interview was so long ago, you two were
probably "lucky" and weren't scrutinized as heavilly as some of the
more recent interviews some applicants have had. We, of course,
applied months and months ago (January 2003), but since our interview
isn't until November, I would not be surprised if WE are subjected to
this latest, more intense scrutiny...)

Since I have attempted (unsuccessfully) to email you myself (taking
the "no spam" out of your email address), I have had to resort to
sending this through the entire misc.immigration board!

Thanks Nick,

Robin

As for those who want to know more about the consulate itself...Amanda
and I have secured a hotel about 5-10 minutes walking distance from
the Consulate. We arrive the day before the interview, and the Hotel
we're staying at will reimburse us for using a particular shuttle from
LAX to the hotel (one way only deal; we'll have to pay and arrange for
our own shuttle BACK to LAX). The day before the interview, we plan
to walk from the hotel to the Musesum of Contemporary Art, which,
based on the maps I've scanned, will be about a ten (15 at most)
minute walk.

I, personally, am glad we didn't choose to rent a car; because that
would stress me out to no end! Our hotel might really suck; but it's
a bed, covers our one-way shuttle, and has free breakfast. And it's a
mere few blocks away from the Consulate

(as best as I can tell, the Consulate must be REALLY CLOSE to the L.A.
CENTRAL LIBRARY [Nick, can you confirm this?])

The hotel we're staying at is the Milner. It's on Flower Street.
Another low-priced hotel, the Stillwell, is located on S Grand Avenue.
HOPE STREET, the street that the Consulate is located, is IN-BETWEEN
these two streets (Flower and S Grand Ave).

(I guess streets and avenues in downtown LA can be parallel to each
other; as opposed to intersecting each other. strange...)

I'm not expecting the Milner to be a lavish, extravagent luxury.
However, if you want THAT, then pick the Hyatt Regency, which is on
the SAME STREET AS THE CONSULATE, right above a mall--Macy's Plaza.

For "fun," I called the hyatt and asked for their cheapest room. A
corner room costs 234 AMERICAN for one night (shudder)

; ) too much for me!

Robin

I live in LA and my interview date is on November. However, I've read
some articles from the people who had inteviews in LA. They were
asked:

Why did you choose Canada to immigrate?
Tell me about your job.
Do you know anybody in Canada?
Have you visited Canada?
How will you get a job in Canada? and so forth...

Interview time is various. Some lucky people interviewed just for 10
min., some people had it for 40 min. or more than that. It depends on
your personal situation I guess.

If you don't live in LA, I recommend a car rental. LA public
transportation is on a strike right now. I don't know when it's going
to be over. Anyway, the traffic is horrible.

I would really appreciate it if you could post your interview details
after your big day. Good luck!
