ehrlichia canis test for dogs
#1
Has anyone had there dog tested for ehrlichia canis with a positive result and then got a negative after treatment? Reason being I have just had a positive for it on Charlie . He has started treatment and has to go for another test in 2 week and I am hoping it has a high success rate...We fly on the 1st Aug and I wont know his results till the 31st July.
Should I start looking for a new home for him just incase???
I was so happy this morning as it was my last full day at work today and getting so near to starting our new life and now I am completely heartbroken. If anyone knows of successes (or failures) with the medication for this can you let me know.
Thanks
Katie

Please help!
We are in the same boat. Our two staffies have both come back as positive and are on tablets. They are due to have their re-tests tomorrow and we have got our fingers crossed as we are due to fly out in less than two weeks. The deal was always all of us go (i.e.dogs included) or we don't go. Anyone got any advice on this front? Apparently this is incresingly common as the levels have been lowered and more dogs are failing. We are beside ourselves - household contents shipped - everything booked and now looks like disaster.

Hopefully your tests will come back fine as ours did (without the Lepto upset)

Cheers for your reply.
Oh my god - seems ridiculous! Relieved to hear that your dog did pass eventually even though he didn't go to Aus 'cos it's given me some hope. Then yours failed the other bit? It all seems crazy - I wonder how accurate and worthwhile these tests really are? I really do sympathise with you and am sorry that your dog didn't get to go, but at least he now has a good home. Thanks again.

Cheers everyone - broke my heart looking at their little faces at the vets today. Should have taken a picture and sent it to AQIS! I hope Aus is worth it?!

Hi everyone,
One of our beloved little fat staffies made it safely to Sydney this morning and is doing well in Eastern Creek on her own! Sadly, our boy staffy failed once again and his results were through the roof having previously dropped after antibiotics to just missing the permissable mark. He is having some further treatment (tablets and injections)(last chance) and we've got everything crossed. We can't put him through any more, but we have done everything that we can. If he fails this time it's definitely because he's got too many antibodies rather than the bug itself - in which case he'll never pass. He's staying here with my Dad. We fly tomorrow and I'm dreading saying goodbye. We are lucky that he has my Dad to stay with, I can't imagine what I would have done if he had nowhere to go.
I contacted AQIS and our British Veterinary Laboratories who were all very helpful but nothing further can be done.
It was heart wrenching stuff splitting them and sending one off on their own. At least she is well and the staff that I spoke to at the quarantine station were lovely.
I am however very p*ssed off to hear that this Erhlichia is becoming more of a problem here in the South East (especially Kent - where we live) following the Channel Tunnel having incidences of rats and foxes coming through from the continent where Ehrlichia is more common. Typical bl**dy Europe! And the bug itself originates from America - does anything good come from that place? The vet actually asked if we had anyone up North that could have him until his retest!
If anyone else has problems and pets are unable to go because of this or something similar, DEFRA (our gov department responsible for such things) requests that people report it to them through the DACTARI scheme (information is used anon.) at:
http://defraweb/animalh/diseases/vet...i/infovets.htm
This will help them to get a clearer picture of what is going on and hopefully help others in the future.
The very best of luck to those of you in a similar position. Please feel free to private message me if anyone wants to know any more. I know how it feels to be frantic with no information on this matter, but now I know more about it now and I hope that I can help others.

Hi all,
So sorry to hear that others are in the same boat. We are currently having a stopover in Singapore on our way to Brisbane. Talk about feeling torn! One doggie in England and one in Australia!
It was agonising saying goodbye to them both, but worse saying goodbye to George because at least we'll soon be reunited with Sophie in Sydney. My Dad is brilliant for having George. I can't imagine what I would have done if we had nowhere for him to go. Even so, I didn't sleep for days before we left - jetlag is not an issue as I'm now used to not sleeping. Really excited about a new life in Aus, but not having George with us will take the shine off it. Feel quite resentful and trying to overcome this as I don't want it to affect how we get on in Aus. Keep trying to convince myself that things happen for a reason but it is tough. At least my Dad and George have got each other for company?! AAAAHHHHH!!!!! Nope - doesn't make it any easier!!!! Just want to scream!!!!
