Default Shipping Motorcycle

Hey Folks,

My FIL wants to ship his beloved Harley over from Ireland to Perth. Anyone out there done the same? Anyone from the UK? Was it a big hassle, expensive, was packing the bike up a big deal? Any particular removalists who might specialise?

Cheers,

D.

Everything! Costs and hassle mainly, potential costs at the other end, registration, import tax (if any, bike has been owned for well over 1 year), who best to pack it up etc etc. I'm not a biker, so i'm tying to preempt his questions!

Any news on the visa yet phoenix?

no not yet.

Ok i'm slinging mine in my container with the furniture so costs are zero mostly. I did have quotes for crating and sending a single bike sep and that came to £500 approx, varied but mostly that.

The info for importing is here :http://www.dotars.gov.au/transport/s...importing.aspx

Dont forget the import licence too $50

You then have registration details to deal with. I've not got that far yet. I'm told it's a bit of a hassle having to run it over ramps to make sure it's 'legal' i'd have thought.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago with info - i'll see if I can find it.

I have looked into things very carefully, and if you are really attached to the bike for sentimental reasons, it might be cheaper and easier to sell in Ireland, and buy in Oz.

For me its cheaper to buy new in Oz than second hand here in Holland, and Harleys are pretty populour down under, so I expect prices to be acceptable. (if you want a Hardley of course )

bringing bikes and cars when emigrating tend to be more hassle and expense than they are worth.

I've got two scooters in the docks at Freo waiting to come into Perth. Dotars was fine as we put one through in my name and One in my Wife's (although they are both registered to me - a perk of marriage, apparently)
PSS crated them up in our container. Just filled in the customs form - if the bike is registered after 1998 they try and get you to pay 10% GST (but no duty) on the original price you paid but only if your primary intention in buying was to import to Australia. Otherwise they will establish a landed value at port based on a fall-back method of valuers assessment (costs about $110, arranged through your shipper). I will go through compliance for one of the scooters and renovate the other one. Apparently they always fleece you on the AQIS quarantine cleaning bill too. PSS agents over here said it's a money making excercise designed to discourage too many people from bringing stuff in.

They expect you to power wash and/or steam cleam you bike before it is packed. Packers can provide AQIS-approved disinfectant on the day of packing. When it arrives, AQIS will inspect it for dirst. They look mainly in the tread of the tyres, underside of the bike and inside the mudguards. If it's not to their liking they order it to be cleaned which costs you transport and (inflated) cleaning rate. I got both my scooters steam cleaned but, unless your bike is concourse (mine definitely aren't) you're at the mercy of the AQIS officials.
