We moved to Vancouver in September 06. Having UK based recruitment consultants getting my number and email address from goodness-only-knows-where I thought I was have no trouble here.
But, unless you are in certain industries such as IT, then Vancouver doesn't really seem to have any. All civil engineering jobs are still rather old skool of who you know type thing.
Being female in a male dominated field I found a job relatively easy (read - 3 months of hard internet searching, applications, phone calls accross the Atlantic etc.) OH being male, not so easy. But once in Vancouver and having made a few contacts, got a job.
Most people find the best way is to visit their potential new home, and make some visits to potential employers. Having a local phone number, address or even just a email address that ends .ca might be helpful. Proving that you are serious about the move will help, rather than just applying on a whim cos you're p1ssed off with rainy England this summer.
Please note that we are in our mid-20s so don't have the greatest amount of experience to bring with us, but we did already had visas lined up though BUNAC so weren't asking the potential employers to sort out WP for us. They also prefer you being in the country to interview, as potentially hiring you creates more work for them.
As for UK based recruitment consultants, when I asked if they had offices in Canada, most said no, and a few even tried to convince us to change our plans and move to Oz or NZ as they are desperate for people in their 20s there as all theirs have moved to Earls Court! They have recruitment consults specialising in the UK to OZ/NZ and Oz/NZ to UK markets.

I run a Uk employment agency & have started recruiting initially Truck drivers for Ontario and New Brunswick . We will have an office in Toronto in Sept /Oct this year. Its early days yet but we are getting there - www.bamfordcs.co.uk/canada. Its the reason I wil be relocating to Canda myself.
