Hi we applied for a job in Dec 06 on BC PNP, went for the interview in feb and was offered the job. Starting wage $28.00 per hour with a review after 3 months rising to $35.00. When we received the offer of employment for the PNP it stated $28.00 per hour as agreed. The next day we received a second offer with a change in rate to $20.00 ph. Which is now what they are prepared to pay.
All our qualifications have been verified and approved and we have sold most of our belongs already. We now feel they are only looking for cheap labour.

We are devastated, has this happened to any one else.

I know, I could call them a lot worse.

The thing is they have 3 people going out. We don't know who the others are and we are wondering have they done the same to every one or just us.

Can I please just add to the article,
Can we accept the job and then search for a new job when we are there?
We want to stay in the provence and the area and we must admit this was a company that we really liked. But just feel they are taking the rise and no longer trust them. After all you reap what you Sow.
Would this be possible or would we have to stay with them until pr was granted.

The first job offer was fine, The second was amended high lighting the wage decrease,
Certainly not a typo.

This was a skilled trade job in the building industry.

Have you asked them to explain and justify a drop of approximately 28.5% in their offer to you. That is a sizable amount of money in anyones terms.

Is it a union job. If so the union could be involved.

No not a union job.

Which is why it is not Union...they can do whatever they like - they can even decrease your wage further upon arrival, if there is a probationary period or your pay rate is in some unquantifiable way linked to "satisfactory performance" of work. If they had already offered you the job and another worker agreed to do the same job for $20/hr, they have to justify your $28 and likely won't. Heed the warning signs, is all I will say.

P.S. Let me guess...it's a BC job.

How about contacting Ron Herrington, BCSA, to see if something can be done through his knowledge and experience?

There is a risk you have to take in dealing with this kind of unethical
company. I will write to this company ,clearly and politely asking to
reinstate the $28.00 per hr. initially agreed for the PNP.

Then politely mention that you are confused about the second offer and perhaps you may have to consult BCPNP and the gas fitter association
for their advice about the decreasing wages prior to employment.

The risk is that the job offer may be cancelled or they may comply to your
request.They need your skills to make money-so you do have as much
bargaining strengths on your side. It will be helpful to read about BC labour
laws and know which union to talk to.The union likes to hear about this kind of a labour abuse .

A clear word to the wise...I strongly suggest you avoid this issue getting on the local employers' airwaves (small town - word of mouth) as an employer would rather touch a shitty stick than a unionist worker.

Move on, find an ethical employer, lose the baggage, lesson learned.

This sounds like a "bait and switch" scam to me, $28 on the LMO to get approval, you get all excited and keen to come, momentum builds. Then they change to $20 (without telling the ministry) and you get screwed over if you decide to go ahead with the move.


Tell em where to stuff their $20, you have a contract with $28 on it dont you? and then report them to service canada if they wont honour it. With any luck they will never get another work permit approved. You will find another job soon enough, hopefully with an ethical employer who's not out to screw you over.

$20 wont be enough to live comfortably on as a single wage in any major canadian city anyway, and switching jobs will have to wait for PR or else require a new worl permit.

Thanks for that advice and don't worry we have no intentions of taking the job. We do have another job offer pretty low wages too but they have been very honest from the start.
