Exchanging UK driver's license for Ontario one
#16
I know Biiiink cheated and went British-Manitoban-Ontarian re: her driving license (sneaky
) but does anyone have any info on how long you need to have held your british license before Ontario will swap it for a full Canadian license instead of one of those half-licenses?

I first exchanged my GB one for Ontario when it was only 9mths old. I'd only had the GB one for 9mths I mean. That didn't phase them, they gave me a G2. I believe I'd have had to take a G2 road test at some point before the 2nd anniversary of my GB test date but obviously got out of it by getting a Manitoba license.

We exchanged Matt's license last week, and as it wasn't issued more than 2 years ago we had to prove he had held a full license for longer than that.

Has anyone had any recent experience of swapping a full UK license for an Ontario license? The MTO website seems to indicate that the requirements have changed since I last looked at it.
Do you need some form of proof of address or simply landing documents/pr card and your UK license?
Any advice appreciated.

I found another page with some different information.
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/visiting.htm
"If you are from another country and visiting Ontario for more than three months, you need an International Driver's Permit from your own country or you may have to apply for an Ontario driver's licence, depending on your length of stay."
Is someone on a TWP deemed resident or visiting?
An International Driver's Permit is valid for 12 months. I'm off to get mine in the next few days. If all goes well on this trip, come 12 months later I need to renew the IDL but how long can you actually be driving on an IDL without having to swap to an Ontario license?

If one held a UK License for less than 2 years, but held onto it until those 2 years were up i.e. didn't drive within Canada until that time and then exchanged it for an Ontario license - would that get them out of having to take a test again?

You think that you can drive on your UK licence for 6 months anyway.
I had to take the test coz they did not have the exchange thing all those years ago. Piece of cake! 25 minute test didn't take one lesson just did it. If you can drive in Europe you can do it here.

Well, I just been having a read of the info and it states :-
What qualifies as "driving experience"? The wife has only just passed her test, but has held her provisional license for over 2 years, does that count as "driving experience"? What are you expected to provide as evidence?
you must pass a vision test and show acceptable proof of your previous licence status and driving experience.

I did gain a few months by him reading the UK date format wrongly (passed on 2nd July which became 7th Feb in the swap), but that was all.

Guess that means she'll have to take a G1 and a G2 test then if we're over there within the next 12 months
Unless she just doesn't exchange it until the two years is up
