Quarter of a lettuce 60c, a tomato $1, a fifth of a long cucumber $1, 100g potato salad $1, 1 hard boiled egg 50c, 100g coleslaw $1. Total $5.10.

I agree. $5 for a tiny bit of vegetation is a complete rip off no matter how you present it.
So my conclusion is don't buy Fruit and vegatables from the supermarket, or the green grocers. Buy pizzas and fish and chips, you get more bang for your buck.

So go to your own market instead of a Supermarket...and as Pom_Chch suggests swap over to winter veg like the rest of sensible people. Out of season vegetables have to travel and that means time less freshness and hence less nutritional value....

The company that owns Pak n Save want to open a F&V warehouse in Dunedin, but that'll be the same, over priced.

Yorkshire is a beautiful place, the countryside is stunning and thankfully non of it is fenced off.
Back in the day buses from miles around used to descend on Barnsley just for the market, I miss that market. I took it for granted, like the big one in Leeds I have walked through hundreds of times. It'd be like an episode of Superamarket Sweep if I was back there.

But even in season F&V is still overpriced like everything else at the supermarket, there's no market in Dunedin, just one farmer market every saturday morning when I'm always busy.

Even better move to Kerikeri - we have apples, mandarins, grapefruit, persimmons, feijoas, figs, nectarines, plums, peaches, lemons, grapes, quince, macademia nuts all in a smallish area - ok only in season. Add in a few chooks and a small veg garden - where is the problem

Must admit I have not looked, but apparently it is the fastest growing town/area in NZ. I still suggest growing much of your own fruit and veg is possible just about anywhere in NZ (just vary your types - accept citrus won't grow as well in Dunedin).

$5 for a cucumber now at Countdown, it's daylight robbery.
For that you could get fish and chips twice or a big pizza from Pizza Hut, there's a reason NZ is so high up the obesity charts, NZ is certainly punching above it's weight when it comes to weight.
Me and the wife have pretty good jobs, she's a social worker and I'm a production manager and we can't afford to eat salad but we could easily eat takeaways every night of the week. Something ain't right.

I must be lucky where I am. I've yet to see it creep over $3 for a cucumber. The newly built Pak and Save here has done wonders for the competition. Even the local countdown have the $1kg deals on spring onions, broccoli etc.
I do disagree with the post about home products being cheaper in supermarkets. I pay a lot less than $15 for my Yorkshire Tea, best tea int world.

Easy squeezy peasy cheeze; easy peazy asparagussy cheese: the lunch time options are endless. LOL
I'm not sure we're quite ready for bacon and green bean sandwiches, cheese and cauli on toast, egg and pea rolls, ham and green beans - nice.

So grow your own like a lot of kiwis, should be possible even in Dunedin. I have even developed a taste for silverbeet (nearly a weed) despite hating it as a kid.

Fruit trees - about 30 mins a month. Veg garden - 30 mins a week. Chooks - better conversation than most Yorkshire markets. But OTY :-)

I think Aldi prices have spoilt me - 39p for a cucumber, I frown when I go to Tesco and have to pay 49p lol
