1000 SAR a month on food might be a bit frugal. In a place with little joy, food is something to be enjoyed. Make it $500+ a month.

land of opportunity for what though? The past couple of years have seen loads of westerners having to leave.

Saudi is changing at breakneck speed but as far as the economy goes I'm not so sure....

I live in small town Saudi. It's okay and Riyadh is only three hours away, but KSA does attract more than it's fair share of oddballs. Lot of Walter Mitty types too. Currently working with a guy...

Firstly, good choice re Pattaya, it can be a bit one dimensional, and doesn't attract the best, foreigner and Thai.

BTW, they have to pay your ticket when you first arrive and when you leave by law, so that doesn't mean anything.

it's fairly straightforward, you send them off to Liverpool and they get DHL to send everything back. Then go to the local passport office to get information updated on the Saudi side.

strange place to go. There's not much there for tourists really. The biggest mall in Thailand maybe but apart from that it's a pretty nondescript suburb.
