Re: UK Land Registry - Proving ID

Using a Notary Public might be easier/cheaper (banks, UPS stores etc.).
The form is a little different from what they'd typically see but verifying the identity of the person signing a form in front...

Re: Baby due next month - citizenship?

This all seems right.

UK registration optional - advantage is that child could easily apply for UK passport at some point in the distant future without any of your documentation.

Hardest part...

Re: Lost British Passport containing E2 Visa

Not necessarily the same consulate as original, but some consulates have policies about who is eligible to apply for a visa at that particular consulate. If you're not applying in a country you have...

Re: Who has recently applied for U.S citizenship?

You lapped me! In Boston, applied May 2017, oath date Aug 2018 - no issues, just went into a black hole for just over 1 year...

Re: Best US bank account for British expats?

When we first moved we chose the bank my employer used (as I didn't have an SSN on day 1).

The last few years I've used Ally - online only, but they reimburse ATM fees at any ATM, pay great...

Just a data point on passport renewal for anyone who's interested:

Re: National bank account decision

Do you need access to a bricks-and-mortar branch? If not, I recommend Ally Bank - they have a reasonable ATM network and reimburse up to $10 a month in ATM fees. Good customer service via phone.

Re: Travel with approved I485, Valid H1B but no green card

Had a similar situation except traveling on advance parole with an expired H1B visa stamp. I had a "computer says no" moment on my return and was sent to secondary, where they asked "Where's your...

Re: Transferring money UK to US

I had to choose between Lloyds and XE for a large amount. I got quotes from both and Lloyds was worse by 0.7%. I did hesitate about adding an uninsured middleman, but for a large sum 0.7% would buy a...

Re: Deposit and rent on arrival - No bank account

My employer wrote a check for rent/deposit then deducted it from my first month's pay, which made things easier.

Having said that, we brought the largest denomination traveler's checks we could...

Re: Warning: TurboTax, Foreign Assets & Form 8938

Re: Travel insurance - UK citizen but not about to be a US PR - confused

I'd second this: with insurance, all you've bought is a piece of paper, until you go to make a claim. In that situation, you don't want to discover that the insurance company disagrees with the...

Re: 1040NR EZ tax form question - foreign income

Re: Moved to USA in mid November - Tax?

It might be worth running the figures as "resident" - I can't now remember why, but arriving in October (so a "nonresident" for that year) it worked out better for me to file as "dual status" so that...

Re: Moved to USA in mid November - Tax?

The first step is to work out your status for US tax purposes - "nonresident", "resident" or optionally "dual-status". There are different tax rates and rules if you are "nonresident". This tax...
