Re: Lost and Confused

It's not as simple as that when you have young kids though Justcol. If it was as easy as leaving your partner and heading off to wherever will make you happy, then people would have done it. But what...

Re: 3rd year in & unhappy - will this change?

Crikey that's a tough one. I would be inclined to agree with Ange. It sounds like you are deeply unhappy and it's just not working for you but not through lack of trying.

I think you need to have...

Re: Update after 14+ years, UK Trip

Thanks for the update Rob. Sounds like you had helluva year in 2019, here's to a great 2020.

I resonate with some of your thoughts/experiences. Like the feeling of wanting to see family and...

Re: Only been 3 months but I want to go home!

I would say stick it out for a bit longer. Home sickness comes in waves, Christmas and other big events can make it worse. Also remember that feelings are fleeting so although you feel a bit crap...

Re: Working abroad in IT

Hi Gozit,

Would you consider New Zealand? You could potentially come in on a working holiday visa. Not permanent but at least you could work a bit, save a bit and enjoy your time traveling around...

Re: Life Knows How To Kick You In The Teeth!

So pleased for the end result Guindalf. The hard part is the waiting and not knowing but I'm pleased it's all over and done with now. Here's to a happy and healthy New year and beyond!

Re: Have I made a big mistake?

Perhaps Wellington might suit a young single gent a little better than New Plymouth? Just a thought, as there are a lot of beautiful areas in NZ but are more geared towards young families. As you...

Re: The wind in NZ now.

We were up at 4am chasing a portable greenhouse around the garden in our pj's! Not ideal, but hey ho Merry Christmas 😁

Re: The way forward for grandparent?

Yep, 'cos your suggestion of "find a kiwi husband" was so much more helpful 😉

Re: Health care

I think what they mean by low cost is that it's not like America where you must have health/medical insurance and there is no public system.

I've known two people with cancer. Apart from doctors...

Re: Big power bank on plane

They saw a cable running from his laptop and into his bag. As you say, flight attendants are pretty on to it with technology and I suspect they are looking out for people doing certain things. Using...

Re: Health care

I personally don't find it too difficult to get my head around. There are some differences and similarities between UK and NZ systems but nothing too major to get your head around.

If you book a...

Re: Big power bank on plane

This was my partners tactic as well, he still got told off. In his defense though, he actually didn't realize he wasn't supposed to using it. Now he sticks to the rules and only uses it whilst in the...

Re: Big power bank on plane

Hi Gozit, you can only use a power bank in between flights to charge your electonics and it must be stored in hand luggage, not in the hold. The power bank must have the what hours (Wh) specified on...

Re: Air NZ

Not surprised! We have never considered flying AirNZ back to the UK. Premium prices for a non premium service, crap flight paths and takes far too long in comparison to other airline choices. China...

Re: Favourite Sayings, Quotes, etc

😂

When announcing bad news, my grandad also used to say "well, that's gonna go down like a shit sandwich."

Re: Favourite Sayings, Quotes, etc

When offered something okay but not great, my grandad always used to say "better than a poke in the eye with a pointed stick." Not deep and meaningful but still makes me chuckle 😁

Re: Auckland with young family

Sometimes though Moses it's not so much about a "better" life, it's about a different life. A sense of adventure, trying something completely new. A lot of those feelings can't be achieved by moving...

Whilst I can resonate to some degree, we're hardly in exile. Most of us made a conscious decision to explore a new life abroad and can return to our home land should we choose...

Re: The way forward for grandparent?

I'm with BEVS on this one. Yes I've read the rules but personally I would risk it and if I was that concerned about it I would set up some form of payment to the people I'm house sitting for so it...

Re: The way forward for grandparent?

I see your point Escape, I really do. But if a tourist house sits for a local, how would INZ ever know? Especially if they don't go through an official site and house sit for a friend of a friend....

Re: The way forward for grandparent?

I honestly can't see house sitting as a problem. It's advertised all over the world to tourists and heaps of tourists do it in NZ (I'm pretty sure they won't have work Visas)...

Re: The way forward for grandparent?

If you're house sitting for free then I don't think it can be classed as work if no money is changing hands? I'm not sure, just my initial thought. We've never paid our house sitters, nor...
