Re: Moving to Gatineau Ottawa

Almyer seems to be the town of choice for those who want a pretty English speaking neighborhood in the Gatineau region. I know quite a few English only speakers who live there and head over the river...

Re: Car seats

I can attest that the police in Ottawa do carry out random checks on car seats. I witnessed them pulling over vehicles at traffic lights a few weeks ago. Basically a cop dressed as a construction...

Re: Mortgages - new immigrant

Re: Living in a small city

Re: Free calls to UK Landlines?

I think we pay about £50 per year for unlimited calls to uk landlines with Skype. We also use FaceTime on apple products and viber, there are a lot of options if you have the technology. I think...

Re: Plug adaptors

You may want to find one with an earth pin as well. I have found they stay in the wall better than the 2 pin adapters, also useful if one of your items needs earthing. For laptops, the power adapters...

Re: Is it worth bringing an iphone 4s?

Not all companies/ tariffs charge for incoming calls or texts. Shop around or go somewhere like the future shop where they carry all the big cell companies and see what suits your needs most.

Re: Can i take my dog when i move to Canada?

Hi Kate, be very wary of immigration attorney's, consultants or relocation specialist telling about your job prospects. They are all after your money in one way shape or form. A relative of mine...

Re: Would like some honest advice

Carpenters here tend to be multi disciplined here(at least in my experience). When we advertise for carpenters, they must be able to frame, drywall, mud and paint, as well as all the usual finish...

Changing from Oil to Natural gas or Propane will make a huge difference. We changed from oil to natural gas and our costs were less than50%. I think the change will have paid for itself within 3...

Re: Taking dogs with us to UK for 3 week holiday

Like everyone else has already stated, taking them back for such a short period is nuts. I would ask around for Kennel recommendations, or seek out a dog sitter. Most Kennels I have used offer...

Re: tax evasion - would my mother be refused entry?

Surely she knew her child was in the forces. Inadvertent or not, she has technically committed fraud. If the laws of Canada state that people convicted of a criminal offence are inadmissible, then...

Re: Quantity Surveyor / Cost Engineer / Estimator & life in CA for single male

There are plenty of jobs in estimating/project management, which is pretty much what a QS would do in th UK. There is no such thing per say as a building surveyor, in my experience the technical work...

Re: What to bring from the UK (to save money/not available in Canada)

I strongly recommend shipping furniture, it is so much more expensive here. Even if you have to pay to store it for a year it will probably be cheaper. Unfurnished rentals are also cheaper
