Re: Are Canadians workaholics?

Not too far away from my office.

So, in my work day yesterday the only annoying habit I observed was the one of leaving a cell phone on the desk while not in the office and not leaving it on...

Re: Can't Wait For Canada...

That sounds great, we've spent some vacation time in the Cotswolds and always enjoyed it.

It sounds like you have a pretty good life in the UK, given the long slog involved in applying and them...

Re: Calling All Ski Bums

I can't offer any advice, but I just wanted to say "good for you" in using your move to Canada to leave the "hum-drum" and do something exciting.

Good luck.

Re: Are Canadians workaholics?

I like to counter the "this is how it is in my life, so this must be how it is for everybody in Canada" type generalizations.

So, I post my own experiences.

Anyway, today as I go about my...

One of which is being married to a Canadian citizen. This one saved me from having to re-apply.

Re: Are Canadians workaholics?

You'd suppose wrong then ... again.

I work in an open-plan office, with a multi-cultural, mixed-sex workforce. Nobody spits, makes sexist comments or any of the other "hobbies" you mention.

The...

Re: Are Canadians workaholics?

Obviously I am fortunate to work in a different part of the computer business. I find the working experience remarkably similar to what I experienced in the UK. i.e. none of the above.

Re: An expensive trip to Calgary

Agreed, we get annual passes but that's because it's a 20 min drive and the kids (10 and 7) enjoy an afternoon there.

However, it's not a patch on "Canada's Wonderland" (about 1 hour north of...

Re: Are Canadians workaholics?

What, the fact that someone claims to work under sweatshop conditions?

Some of us have decent well-paid jobs with good conditions.

But, I'll ask the family if they would like to swap all that...

Re: Canada : good place for immigrants ?

It was in repsonse to the statement "Canada doesn't allow employable immigrants".

I'm an immigrant and employed. The bank deposits are my salary and quarterly profit share bonus.

Re: Are Canadians workaholics?

In Calgary people tend to start and finish earlier. I start around 7:30am and leave around 4:00pm. I always take an hour for lunch and rarely take work home either during the week or at weekends.

Re: Canada : good place for immigrants ?

So who is it that deposits a tidy sum in my bank account every two weeks, and another lump sum every three months ... the tooth fairy??

Re: Victoria Area - Info Request

I can't claim that. I'm married to a Canuck and I applied for PR before we were married and landed as such in Vancouver in 1994 (on our honeymoon - ahhh)

Anyway, due to one thing and another we...

Re: Victoria Area - Info Request

We're not moving on permanently for a while, probably not until our children finish high school. But it never hurts to do some planning. It took us 10 years to move from the UK to Canada and in all...

Aha, it's "down on Canada week" for Gezza, changed your mind again?

But back to your statement, preying on the vulnerable and naive who wish to start a new life is unfortunately not a practice...

Re: Exchange rate/money advice

Ifs and buts, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I changed the money from our house sale at $2.45 in a panic. The rate then hit $2.50 and my wife didn't speak to me for a few days :)

Re: Talking point: Guardian Angels in Canada?

I saw one once on the tube.

I'm not violent, nor do I advocate violence, but I reckon I could've handled him quite easily.

What he would've done against some of the real low-life that used...

Victoria Area - Info Request

We're starting our research into our next "downshift", whenever that might be, and we're looking at Van island.

Last time we visited was 1994 and because of planned family visits and visitors I...

Re: Apologies for the Weather !!

When I left for work at 7:30am this morning it was -15C, by mid-afternoon it was +6C (the biggest temp rise this year). Not a chinook, just the sunshine warming the air up.

It's not got up to +17C...

Re: Exchange rate/money advice

The Bank of Canada signalled that it might not have to put IR's here up as much as was being predicted.

There was talk of IR's here going up to 6%, now the predictions are around 4.5%.

Re: House Sale Dilema

Perhaps the offer was the maximum they thought the property was worth.

A property is only worth what someone will pay, it's their money if they don't think it's worth any more why should they pay...
