Re: Interest Rates drop again but my mortgage

Wish ours was 6.09% - we are around 7.3% and fixed in for the next two years :( Ah well, it could have gone the other way I suppose...

Heating Costs - Gas vs Electric?

It's chilly here in Perth now in the mornings... I have the option of using the portable mains gas heater or the reverse split cycle system.

I know that I could probably answer my own question...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

We hated renting as well, hated the lack of security and the children just didn't feel at home either. We are probably paying about $1000 more in mortgage etc payments per month than we did in rent...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

That's what I was thinking, and also how I wouldn't like to be paying rent all through my retirement if I could help it.

Maybe a 30 year mortgage is the only way some people can get on the housing...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

I don't know - could be somebody in their forties who has teenage children, buys an "average" priced house, doesn't have much of a deposit and needs to make the repayments as low as possible?

Or...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

Well it was mentioned earlier in this thread, quite correctly, that the average house price in Perth is 450k. I was giving figures for repayments on around $385k over 30 years (so a 65k deposit).

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

Not at all, totally agree with you that most people have to tighten their belts when they get a mortgage, but what would the take-home pay be on, say, an 80k package? Probably around 55k or...

Re: Any families in Australia living on combined gross income of less than $100,000 a

With the average house price you'll be paying around $34K (maybe more) per year over a 30 year mortgage  Don't know how people could manage to do that on less than $100K gross per year to be...

Re: UK Pension

Pretty sure that it's only the actual growth (from the six month date to the date you transfer it) that is liable for tax though (at 15%) - not the whole amount, so not quite as bad as it sounds.

Re: job offer in kwinana

Good luck with it all. You probably wouldn't want to live in Kwinana, but Baldivis is only a short commute and it's a lovely area - not too pricey either.

I know a bit about both suburbs, as well...

Re: Final Salary Pension Transfer

Thanks for the replies, this is something we definitely feel we should take professional advice about. Two votes for Prism then - anybody else have a recommendation?

Much appreciated :)

Re: Final Salary Pension Transfer

I know there are risks and also some benefits to moving it and just don't want to make the wrong decision. The sums involved are probably quite high I would say (although that's subjective I guess)...

457 Visa holders don't have to pay for schooling in WA (unless of course it's private schooling in which case everybody has to pay, regardless of visa).

Unless the rules have changes in the past...

Re: Mums coming over !! What do we need to get her??

Ah, but they don't pay for this visa at all, it's totally free. Maybe it's just what it "says on the tin", the visitor can stay up to three months on each trip, and the visa lasts for a year - so...

Re: Mums coming over !! What do we need to get her??

I really, really didn't mean anything dishonest :) If it is a three month visa though, then why does it last for a year I wonder, why not just three months?

Re: Mums coming over !! What do we need to get her??

Well, the visa lasts for one year, and within that year each visit must not extend three months. Theoretically I guess you could stay for three months, have a couple of days off-shore then come back...
