Re: Green card/citizenship and relocation

The standard advice is to do everything you can to make sure you have citizenship to match your kids'. If they decide to move back as an adult, do you really want to have to face the visa battle...

Re: Student visa delays?

Yup. I alerted my company's HR to exactly this possibility today. It would be very easy to overlook these, especially if the company lawyers weren't involved in securing them.

Re: Student visa delays?

That is brutal. Because they are not just kicking them out, which would almost-kinda have some logic to it, if it were restricted to issuance of new visas. But they are saying students can come in IF...

Re: 2020 Election

To be fair, that is likely quite relevant experience for the hole he has dug himself into.

Re: Recent UK Graduate - Trying to plan ahead

Same for me (in maths). However, what has changed since I went through is that what used to be a one-year Honours add-on to bridge into a research higher degree, became a two-year coursework Masters....

Re: Recent UK Graduate - Trying to plan ahead

OP: are you hoping to go into academia, or looking for a job in industry? As SFNative has pointed out, postdoc-ing in the US is an easy avenue for a fresh PhD grad, but is academia what you actually...

Re: H1 and L1 visas to be suspended by President.

Huh, looks like academics may be safe on the J-1:

There is no "visiting scholar" on that list. Of course, more senior faculty hires will be screwed by the H-1B problem (and it would have been...

Re: When do we expect Trump to lift the travel ban against UK?

Sorry for being slow. I don't think this is off topic at all, since it has got a lot to do with international travel. But if you mean "off topic" in the sense of "not abject drivel", then yes, I...

Re: When do we expect Trump to lift the travel ban against UK?

I have been staying away from this thread because of all this garbage *waves all around*. Welcome to the Trailer Park

I just read your and Pollyanna's posts. I'm sorry to hear that your...

Re: Brits thinking of moving from New Zealand to Sarasota

There's a direct flight PER-LHR, if you're wanting to shave as much off the long haul as you can. It is NOT short (~18 hours), but eliminating the connection does reduce various headaches.

Re: Trump Tweets Immigration into the US will be suspended.

LOL

And W.T.F.

Sorry, only stupid text-speak is a suitable response to this kind of stupidity. I'm truly sorry to those whose lives are hanging in the balance on the drivellings of the...

Re: Returning citizen -- credit question

Roger that, Cap'n. I am, frankly, terrified at the whole idea, so it should not be difficult to convince myself to stay well within my means.

Re: Returning citizen -- credit question

Mortgage insurance -- who knew! (Actually, it probably exists in the US too, I have just never considered buying here.) I will definitely keep that in mind, since it sounds like I would be skating...

Returning citizen -- credit question

Hi Aussie forum

I am an AU citizen who is normally in the US forum, since I have been Stateside for the past 12 years. But now I'm starting to think about putting together a plan to head...

Re: When do we expect Trump to lift the travel ban against UK?

Are you sure? The world has been turned upside down and you may find people willing to help in unexpected quarters. Is there an independent third party in the town who might be able to act as...

Re: H-4 advice

Just to quickly check: is this an ongoing position (tenure-track)? If it's fixed term (postdoc, visiting assistant professor, etc.), a J-1 could be another option, which would open up work for you on...

Re: $1200 Payout. Are immigrants eligible?

Best of luck to the insurance companies, tbh. This is yet another industry where the scale of the problem is bound to break the existing model. Because one number that is going to stay bigger than...

Re: USA Internship Visa

Have you asked your employer? Universities routinely sponsor J1 visas for students and academics; they should be able to advise if their sponsorship extends to on-campus internships.

But yes,...

Re: 2020 census

Re: How Isolated is everyone right now?

Look after yourself, mate! I hear all the rich Manhattanites have scampered for the Hamptons -- good luck to them, I say. I'd prefer to be here, where people really do look out for each other. It...

Re: Coronavirus and Health status

On a video call last week with a colleague in Milan, the topic of the low German mortality rate came up. She did the most glorious Italian scoff before going on to explain that the Germans are...

Re: COVID-19 GC/Visa Implications

I do not like your chances of getting any house hunting done right now. Even after you are done with self-isolation, how many realtors will be conducting business, much less tours??

Since the...

Re: How Isolated is everyone right now?

Thanks, PF! I've been pretty locked down for a while and seem to have entered my "long haul flight" Zen space, so I would say things are going fine so far. The explosion of cases in NYC is a sobering...

Absolutely! We are all alongside you :)

Jsmth321 There are some great virtual tours of museums/zoos/etc. online, perhaps they can provide a bit of distraction? Also, there's BE's own Interesting...
