Transferring money out of China?

Hi!
my son will shortly finish his stint as a language teacher in Harbin and is wondering about the best and safest way of transferring the money he's saved back to the UK or US.
any suggestions...

We have finally decided to get rid of the old carpets and get a wooden floor. It's a huge open-plan living area, so we are talking serious money... So we want to get it right first time.
